In my work car park (which is locked but anyone with a key can get access to - and these aren't really hard to come by for anyone who works on the railway) there is what I would imagine is an abandoned car. Its a renault megane coupe, the tax ran out on the 31st December 2007. I read you can claim abandoned cars, but is this applicable to private property?

It has to be sat on the public road, with expired tax, & you apply for the V5 which the owner recieves a letter to contest if its not actually abandoned.
My guess is that its broken down & been left until the owner decides what to do with it.

never heard of claiming cars. Maybe if you owned the land you could send off for a logbook for it

Cheers colin, it could well be that, just seems odd as no-one I work with seems to have any ideas whose it is.
If you were to apply for the V5 would the current owner be given your details?

a bit of googling and found me this:
quote: A fairly common question, so time to put together a sticky FAQ on this I think...
How to go about it:
Firstly call the Police first to check the car has not been involved in criminal activity, and mention it has been left as though it were abandoned.
If clean, go to the post office and apply for the V5, via the V62 form. Previously free, you now need to pay DVLA £20.
The form is also downloadable on-line right-click, save as (http://www.direct.gov.uk/assetRoot/04/01/05/09/04010509.pdf).
On receipt, the DVLA will write to the previous registered keeper informing them that someone is trying to re-register the vehicle and if that’s OK with them.
If (and only if) the registered owner does not object, you will be issued with a V5 log book.
Clearly you cannot technically move the car prior to being allocated a V5, since the owner could say ‘I want it’ and by default you’d be in the possession of a stolen car. However some will say move the car first to avoid it being vandalized etc. This is very inadvisable.
Timescale between applying for V5 via V62 and actually receiving it – unknown. Anyone?
Comments welcome on this from anyone with more info – I’ll add anymore useful info that comes up, tidy the thread and close it as an FAQ in due course.

Nope they get a letter informing them someone has attemptied to claim ownership of the car & should they wish to refuse then contact within so many days. If they dont bother then the cars yours to collect.
Like I said though it has to be on the public road with no tax!
I remember a story several years ago when guy got an Escort Cossie for £250 (£50 flatbed & £200 for new locks or something daft!) That will be a 1 off & I imagine the owner was either dead or in jail

doesnt have to be on the road. Someone left a car at the back of our works, which is private. The old boy that makes brews at work went thru all that stuff for claiming the V5 and after about 6 months it came through and he sold the car.
Funny thing is a few months on some guy came into work going where the fuck is my car, i left it in the yard! He had been in Australia for a year!

Surely has to be on the road, otherwise anyone could go round looking for cars parked up on private ground, on drives & applying for the V5's

The yard is open for deliveries 8am - 5pm but it gets locked at night, it belongs to my works and they rent a few units out to mechanics and a metal fabrication place. Its not hard to get into but its not public road.
Yes you could colin, but as said the DVLA or whoever contact the registered keeper.....
