Right looking into getting one for my birthday.
Seen one i like on the DVLA website.
Is it simply a case of phoning them up saying "i want that one" giving them
the name of the person who appears on the V5 Logbook, the registration mark or year of the vehicle that the number will be going on.
And then they send out out a new V5?

You buy it and get a certificate of entitlement, which you then send off with the car docs to apply to assign the reg to that car.
All keeper names have to match.

And what sort of time period does this take. Several weeks knowing the DVLA

Just buy it online, the'll send forms with the plate on retention (for up to 12 months) whicbh you then take or send to the DVLA to get assigned to a car.

The first bit is correct but they dont send you a new v5 they send you the certificate for the plate in your name then you go to your local dvla office with that your v5 and mot and tax disc, and they will issue you with new ones with the new reg on them then the new v5 will arrive through the post

How long does it take to transfer a private plate from car 1 to car 2, and get another plate to put back on car 1?

Anything from between a week to maybe 6 weeks depending how busy they are.
You can go to your nearest office & they will usually do it there & then.....again depending how busy they are.
Dont expect it done in a hurry around new reg plate dates, March/September?

If its nothing special & you change car alot I wouldnt bother. £105 a time gets a bit un-funny after a while!

I swapped a private plate from my Golf to another car, then my plate, which was on retention, onto my Golf, within 7 working days, the DVLA aren't as bad as they seem sometimes

Ive done around 40 cherished plate transfers (3 my own - C8LNJ) most being the company pool cars/works vans from my old job - that got palmed off to me as the new guy, though I didnt mind at all. The range of times vaired drasticly, some done straight away, some kept & sent back over a couple weeks, some sent off to return at vaired time intervals. Never been more than a 3-4 weeks usually much less, straight away or a week, but ive heard some folk waiting ages!
Your best to go in person & join the que if your in a hurry to get it done!

Yeah, unless you already own the car its getting transfered to. I usually sell one before buying the next as I assume most folk do?
105 - remove plate, hold for 12 months
25 to hold each additional year
80 - to change if you hold both V5's

i thought it was £80. i bought a private plate from dvla i think you have to ring them if its on there website. i cant even assign mine to my car yet coz its R reg and the plate is S reg but atleast nobdy else can have it now coz its all mine. costs £25 a year if you dont assign it to a vehicle.
i think that new form you are talking about is a V750 or sumthing.

I just got my plate onto my Leon today, went into the local DVLA office with the retention cert, MOT cert, V5 doc and tax disc. The mot and tax was changed over there and then with the new plates on then and the V5 will come through in the post within the next few weeks
