I was Sat in court today with my friend who was found in posession of no more than a spliff's worth of Green and Arrested, And because he has previously had 2 "Street Warnings" for possession of Canabis the Judge threatened to give him a Short Custodial Sentence.
Luckily his solicitor managed to talk them into Reducing it to a conditional discharge and a fine of £200.
does anybody find this OTT? wanting to lock people up for a little spliff causing no harm to anyone?
I dont smoke it personally but 9/10 of my freinds do and is pretty much the norm, especially round here.

Its illegal at the end of the day and hes had 2 warnings beforehand, he should of been more careful or ceased it completely.
The goverment can't just give warnings out to people all the time because most of us wont give a fuck and start being very obvious/more casual when it comes to public drug use. Think about it.

He wouldnt have served time for posession, at very worse it would have been a suspended sentence, which is what I ended up with for a much more serious offence (as well as probation, community service and a fine :S )

No, its not that bad.
Been watching those police programs recently. REALLY gets my goat. Ooo drug dealer is so bad blah blah, smashes doors down, armed police etc.... Blokes treated as scumbag etc......
Then they will give lecture about why its so bad blah blah....
Then the next clip is of them dealing with about 50 drunks at the weekend, pissing everywhere, getting into fights, being sh1tty with the coppers blah blah, and they hardly blat an eyelid...
I wonder who is really worse......... The bloke at home growing a few plants which is illegal, chilling out, watching TV, not causing an issue, or the mass of drunks needing 20+ police officers to patrol the town in case of fights and such............
Next they will say its damaging to your health....... Can cause mental issues. So what can alchole do???
I've recently had to give up, been 3 weeks now, and tbh, other than being more awake in the mornings, I feel no different.
Funny thing is too, I wonder how many people (me included) turn into a totally different person when they are drunk (hence why I don't drink so much anymore).......... Abusive, nasty, arrogent, speak before you think etc..
But its illegal........... So should be banned (so is doing 70+mph on a motorway, but how many police off beat do that I wonder??? Its illegal, no difference)...

Daimo I know you feel very strong about this subject, but this is someone who was caught probably in public with the substance, I do understand what you mean by the guy at home, playing playstation and drinking cider not harming anyone but it sounds like this guy went out in public to do it.

The fact he has had two warnings before means nothing in my book- The fact is he was on the verge of getting a prison sentance for possesion of something less dangerous than alcohol that was to be used for his own consumption.
The laws regarding cannabis in this country are a joke -- How can alcohol be advertised on television while cannabis remain an illegal substance.
No one stops smoking cannabis because it is illegal ... the only thing that happens due to it being illegal are.....
1- The quality of cannabis goes down... it is cut with things such as sand which puts the health of every smoker at risk- this would not be the case if it was legalised.,
2- Dealers make money instead of the state making money form the drug ... The fact you have to buy from a dealer is far more likely to expose smokers to other harder drugs than if you could buy from a licensed shop.
3- All my friends smoke every day -- they have a levels, degrees, one is a teacher, one is a solicitor, they have clean driving licenses and no criminal convictions. They smoke in their own homes and fully accept the health risks to their own bodies.
How can anyone end up in prison for possesion? This does not help the drug problem in this country go away-- it makes it get worse.

I know what you are saying-- but walking through oxford on a friday or satarday night it is not cannabis that is causing problems in this country ... itys alcohol and cocaine. You smoke a spliff in public-- so what? Somebody might smell it and not like it- that is the only effect it is going to have on the general population of this country.

AS a poll, I wonder how many pot smokers would be happier to be able to buy weed legally instead of having to go find some council dole dosser to go get it from...
My ex dealer got banged up for 2+ years, the family are all scum, i HATED going there, but at the time, I only had one number...
If I could have gone to a coffeeshop or somewhere to buy it legally, I certainly would.
Willay, totally agree. I used to smoke it in public a few years back, but things have been clamped down on, in all areas. Cars, bikes, driving, drugs etc..... If your happy to smoke it in public, accept that you MAY get caught and take it on the chin.
I got caught once in public, scarest time of my life. Made to feel like scum, told i'd be onto bigger harder things in the future by a sargent giving me the windy story... Arrested, put in a cell, made to feel like scum. Yet i was an IT professional working for a big company in the city, never claiming benefits or nowt.....
5 years later, I wouldn't touch a harder drug........ Hmmmmmmm
I only "liked" to smoke now in my garden (never in the house), watching the wildlife, the pond and stream flowing, sitting in my nice garden chairs.... Because I don't want the risk of being caught. But still had to be carefull of the neighbours, as it stinks

Yes I cant believe these idiots would smoke a spliff in a pub-- they could easily upset someone who has drunk 10 pints with their selfish actions and take a kicking for it ........ I understand what you are saying but dont you see how silly that sounds ... you can drunk till you are violent in a pub before you have to leave-- but you cant sit down and smo0ke a spliff?
Just because you drink your drug and it is taxed doesnt make it any better than cannabis-- in terms of its effect on the general population of this country alcohol is the most damaging drug.

Every smoker in this country would happily pay more for their weed if they could buy good quality, pure cannabis from a shop and not be forced to be a criminal. I resent the fact that I am made to be a criminal for enjoying the odd spliff.... I would happily pay tax the same as I do on alcohol, fags and petrol --- all these substances are harmful and they are taxed to represent this- why cant cannabis be treated in a similar way?

I dunno, maybe because how potent it is? and its something you can easily produce at home? Its hard to control it.

Its not as potant or addictive or toxic as alcohol is.... you can overdose on alcohol and die from alcohol poisoning-- you can not do this with cannabis
You can produce alcohol at home -- you dont because whats the point - would rather go to a pub or an offie and buy alcohol you know is good quality and you know exactly what strength it is.
The same applies to cannabis... not everyone wants mind bending skunk ... I would like to be able to go to a retailer- buy a pure cannabis amount that I would know exactly how strong it is, pay my tax and go about my day.
no one would be growing their own cannabis if it was legal... whats the point?

I'm guessing that it would probably be cheaper to produce at home, its probably not the same case with booze (it will taste shit) and tobacco (I'm guessing here).
when I mean potant its like... if you swallow a small big of green or swallow a shot of vodka, whats more likely to fuck you up for hours on end?

Even if they made it legal to buy, surely it would then be illegal to grow unless you had a license? I'm pretty sure you have to have one for tabacco and booze?
