I admire both of the sports, and will watch & follow them both. I was speaking to my dad last night, and I ended up saying 'I think that rally drivers use much more skill than f1 drivers, and think they're better'

It got me thinking aswell, obviously both sports involve a hell of a lot of skill. But how do you think they'd compare if they swapped cars for the day?

Who do you think uses more skill?

I would say that a rally driver would handle the f1 car better than the f1 driver in the rally car

rally drivers race on all diff types of surfaces and conditions

f1 drivers race on a track all the time so would shit themselves when the tried racing on gravel or snow

rally drivers defo have more skill i would say because they have to focus more because of tree's etc and f1 drivers are very safe these days so less thought i suppose but f1 drivers have a more physical drive with the massive G-forces.

an f1 car is many times more difficult to drive then a rally car.

also they have to cope with far higher speeds

The f1 cars only have much more grip if you have the skill to drive them fast enough, as most of it comes from the aerodynamics pushing it down onto the track. As richard hammond once showed when he was driving an f1 car (or it was something very similar which uses the same principle.).

F1 drivers.

Rally drivers would be quicker on a road, and can get a car round a corner, but they also have a co driver letting them know everything thats coming, bumps, corners, angles, jumps, everything. The driver doesn't need to learn. No do they need to overtake.

Where-as an F1 driver (stupid areodynamics aside) needs to learn themselves, compare data of other drivers and push a little harder, no co-driver, and they also need to learn the art of not only overtaking, but overtaking and keeping the position, as well as defending.

So in reality, I feel that comparing F1 drivers to rally drivers is as comparable as comapring to a bike rider.... I.e you can't.

Totally different driving techniques, styles, and skills.

If you want to put the art of rally driving and racing combined, watch the Trophee Andros ICE racing series. Lots of old F1/Rally drivers race in it.

Oh, of which Prost, a Former F1 driver, has been dominant for years...

So IF comparing, going on that basis, F1 drivers...

But Rally Drivers are just crazy mental and have balls of titanium.

Good point Fro. You've got to drive them REALLY hard just to keep the tyres warm, or you'll spin off, and brake hard enough to keep the brakes warm, or you wont stop Hammond showed it's rather hard just to pull off in a F1 car as he took 6/7 times...

damo - The f1 drivers do have the pit crew monitoring them and everything though so in a way they have a load of co-pilots

True in that sense, I guess thats another reason its hard to compare. Such different sports, even though both on 4 wheels.

I found rallying much more fun in the 80's when the likes of RS200s, Lancia intergrales etc had the nuts tuned off them to over 700bhp... That was the skillfull days, far too much power

Rallying is an art though no doubt, but all drivers at top level can reallyt drive though. They make it look so effortless and easy.

I'd say F1 cause of the reaction speeds and the sheer trouble they get put through.

I dont think its clear cut, you go and watch the race of champions over the years and F1 drivers never dominate and the same with rally drivers. most drivers competing in motorsport can adapt to almost anything with an engine look at Mcrae he could ride a superbike fairly well, Kimi Raikkonen won a snowmobile race at the start of the season and is also very good at MX, Valentino Rossi was very impressive when driving an Ferrari F1 car, Travis Pastrana going into rallying from freestyle MX the list goes on.

Any pro motor racing requires great skill to be the best. Just different kind of skills.

Like comparing apples and oranges, both still fruits but still different.

well i would say rally divers since colin mcrae went from rally driving to gt cars, but i dont 'think' that f1 drivers would beable to put the car in the same places that a rally driver could.

ah, but once you know that you have to give it more than normal revs to get it moving and that it wont damage anything.

driving a f1car fast is down to more bollox/bravery and trust in the car mechanics.

if you watch the autocar vid where he drives a f1car with martin brundell.. it shows that its not THAT hard to drive a F1 car, but keeping it at race pace is where the skill comes in.

F1 car for me, though rally drivers work harder I believe the skill lies in the higher speeds of F1. The cars are very difficult to drive, never mind at 200mph.
