Ok - if your going to buy a 2nd hand bike look for something thats been raced and rebuild it. Chances are a racer has looked after it better then some green lane pleb

2 stroke engines are a piece of piss to work on, best bets to put a new piston + ring in - run it in and get used to the power - dont make the bike faster by tuning it unless your using it to its full potential

I had a kx 125 and it was the worst bike i ever had, then i bought a brand spanking 04 yz125 - knew yam engines inside out so was easy to work on

go for a ktm - linage-less rear suspension, hydrolic clutch and a few trick bits such as vforce reeds and decent rims. quickest 125's iirc

also dont skimp on a helmet + boots unless your value your limbs more then money.

remember you wrighty from mx trax.

had 2 bikes a 97 cr125 and a 03 yz125. both good bikes. you cant really go wrong with a 2 stroke mate. like wrighty says race bikes are better looked after but there easy to fix..

essex mx is a good track and fairly local to you mate

It completely takes it out of you riding mx - so hard work and your fitness has to be kept ontop of lol as im finding out the hard way

You ridden a bike before? anyone can hammer a 125 around so you will find most of them are pretty fucked engine wise, more than that maintainance is a BIG part, greasing up the swingarm/linkage every couple of rides to prevent wear as this gets costly, have a look on www.mxtrax.co.uk for help and bikes.

I had a kx100 when i was younger whic was an awesome little bike, then stopped riding, got back into it a while ago now buying an RM125 which was a nail, bought it off here ended up spending nearly 1k to make it right loosing loads when i moved onto a yz250 and not yz450f which is a complete animal but love it to bits

Depends what year you buy - I had an old DT250 and it was MX through and through.

I disagree about anyone can hammer a 125 around, takes a lot of skill and clutchwork to keep a 125 singing, where as with 250s and 4 strokes you can ride them a lot lazier as theres plenty of power low down in the rev range, I ride mainly enduro and trails and on a 125 you need to be on the limit to keep with the bigger bikes and you need to be fit very fit.

Ideal first bike would be a 125 2 stroke any jap bike, KTMs have a good spec (brembo brakes, hydraulic clutch) but the handling and suspension set up is not as good as the Jap bikes I have found. I currently ride a 2005 Honda CR 125, not ideal first bike as the power is all top end, where as the Yamaha has a good bit of bottom end power which means its easier to keep the speed up if you aint got the confidence to be on the limit all the time.

A 250 two stroke might be a bit much for a first timer, also depending on your size and weight a 125 might be too small if your on the heavy side. 250 four stroke is a good learner bike, nice smooth power, only downside is the maintenance compared to a 2 stroke, can be on the expensive side.

Don't you mean value your money more than limbs????

Apart from that I agree.

Thinking your fit because you go to the gym 3 times a week will soon slap you in the face when you start motocross!

I ride, Got a KTM 125, im also from mxtrax..

Thinking of selling mine soon to get a new car, then im getting a brand new ktm 250f

Motocross is hard!

best bet is trials and motocross newspaper, they've got a forsale section in the back of that, also ebay, but theres too many chavs selling stolen/knackered bikes on there.

Deffo get a 125, KTM/CR/YZ/KX/RM, they're all pretty good.. Depending on your budget id go for a 2003+

Good luck.

Yer I would try and get a 2004+ Yamaha YZ 125 or the Honda CR 125 2004+, they both have aluminium frames and are well known for being good handling bike. If you decide to get a Honda definitely go for a 2005 or later as from 05 the CR had a much better motor compared to the years before, although they run very rich from the factory so definitely require jetting otherwise you will be blowing a plug every 15 mins.

You cant really go wrong with any of the Jap bikes though, they are all pretty similar, just the Yamaha and Honda have the aluminium frames.

i've got a big wheel kx80 with a tuned kx100 engine it's a sleeper lol
defo get a 2stoke bike though because they are so easy to work on, lighter and have the "turbo" effect when in the power band, major fun

I agree about the hit that 2 strokes give, 4 strokes are so smooth and progressive, boring power delivery but very efficient at getting the power down

KTM are REALLY rated mate, and YZ's. Stay away from the RM's

Infact my mate is selling his yz125, had loads of work done to it too, 2001 model.
