ive been offered a 1998 punto gt by a guy i work with pretty cheaply.. now it needs a new fuel tank but its never been thrashed and is in pretty good condition.. parts are gonna be cheap aswell as i work for fiat..

but what are peoples opinions on them? whats the handling like compared to the corsa? are they a pretty nippy car? what do they compare to in terms of performance?

They're a bloody quick car for what they are.

I would say.... expect expensive repaires, but you can get parts through your work.

Terms of performance - untill about 50mph they're a car's length ahead of a 106gti. Pretty much a similar speed to 1.6 corsas, but they handle a lot better. Quick in a straight line, and they're good fun little cars.

Edit: Quicker off the mark than a corsa / vtr. Vts's and 106gti's are similar off the line, but they will beat you on a 1/4 mile (i think)

They're a typical 90s turbo car, they're not going to be reliable if they've had the boost wound up.

obviously if parts are upgraded to cope with power these cars will be reliable!! but people just wind the boost up and it f***k them

I used to want one, driven a yellow one in hollyhead. Much quicker off the line than mine, but top end it's not too noticable. Boost was on a standard level though.

What colour is the one you've been offered?

its dark blue and has the dark grey wheels... which unfortunately is the least powered version with stricter emissions on the ecu

The three Punto GT series

Punto GT production spots three series of the most powerful Punto Mk1 car:

1st series (1993-1995)
most powerful engine, rear badge not different from other Punto Mk1
2nd series (1995-1997)
revised engine, rear badge with bigger GT red logo
3rd series (1997-1999)
less powerful engine, ECU maps updated to more severe emissions, dark grey wheels

yeah, but that's what you'd tell a prospective buyer even if you wound it all the way up every now and then

I reckon give it a go.

With just a seb2 spec they are pretty damn quick.

Only draw back is they dont handle well at all, and I recently spoke to a guy who owned one on nitrous and he mentioned it quick but its hard to press it through corners as its just not very inspiring.

If your just after some quick cheap fun take a punt.

I would really love an Uno Turbo

mine was seb2 with FMIC, and i recon about 170ish bhp.

the boost standard is 1.2Bar, so 17psi i think.

in standard form the 0-60 is about 7seconds or something like that.

GT1 - More BHP Less Torque
GT2 - Same BHP Same Torque (but well nice interior)
GT3 - Less BHP More Torque

now the lowest BHP i beleive was 133 in the GT3 and the GT1 gave 135.

so all in all.. they were much the same, they dont handle that bad if on coilovers with a strut brace. mine was like that and i thought it handled fine. no body roll.
