Disused quarry -

Willing vehicle -

Silver one is my mates - he wants smaller wheels so he can upsize on the tyre so I'm straight swapping my 15s for his 17s. Kind of strange concept for me but I'm not arguing

Good day out. There are some videos floating about which I'll upload when I get sent them. My mate broke his prop shaft on his Defender so not many from that - he gets places I don't - older ones are here

Ian, where is that?

I have been off-roading in a Suzuki SJ410 near Monmouth, which looks very similar to that place!

I didn't like the Freelander when it first came out, but they've really grown on me. Apparently, they're more capable off-road than they look.

Off-road is pretty fun though. I've been round the Land Rover Experience at Solihull in a Discovery and the places that it went were unbelievable! Where's that quarry?

Mouldsworth in Cheshire.

Freelander is OK off road, not in the same league as Defender and Disco and also another mate has a Maverick which is also very capable, moreso than mine, but its still enough to challenge me. The car will do a lot more than I can make it do. Rather like learning to push a car fast, this is generally safer and cheaper but equally fun.

My mates Defender - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld57Jf9ZF04

I go in the water in mine but nothing that deep!

Yes although tyres are expensive. Was considering upsizing a little as well but I'm not sure what size I can go to or even anything about the wheels. There is also an issue with the hub design preventing wheel swaps from cars of a different design.

Sucks to not know anything about them, plus there are a lot of people on the LR forums whose reply to 'how do you make a Freelander better off road' is 'sell it and buy a Defender'.

Freelanders aint bad mate. Although there no defender off road, they are built by landrover which means they will go off road and be more than capable. Unlike most smaller 'off roaders' out there.

Iv grow up always having landies in the family and am going to pursuade my girlfirend to get an older freelander soon.......then i can borrow it for use in the firld or bridle path that i live on

Ian, how much was it to take yuor car there for the day??

to be honest if you wanted bigger wheels, the best size is 16.. bronco4x4.com is quite a cheap place for all terrain tyres and they sell rims as well... although im not too sure on the freelander hub issue..

on a 16" rim you should be able to got about 235/65 without much trouble although you may have to do some cutting around the sills.. although a lift kit will sort that

if you goto mud-club.co.uk then theres a section on freelanders and info on body lift kits etc

Yeah you get all sorts from old Series Land Rovers, Defenders, Discos through to newer stuff, Disco 3 last time I went, late shape RR this time. Plus the odd Frontera, loads of Suzukis SJ and Jimnys.

All states of tune as well, some are completely road standard like mine, others quite bonkers and can get places that you can't even walk.

I'll check that site out, thanks. Biggest issue with going too crazy is that I went halves with my mum on it and she also uses it, and when asked about buying some off road gear for it I think her exact words were 'whatever, so long as I don't have to drive a tarted up mayhorse'.

So obviously it need to look fairly standard, so lift kit is out. Snorkel has already been overruled
