CARS PEOPLE!
My mate is looking at getting a new car, probably from a dealer so he can part exchange.
Just wondering, what sort of things should he ask about, i mean if the wheels have marks on them or fag burns on the seats
should he ask if he gets any free servicing, etc?
Anything not to ask? anyone work in a dealership and know what sort of things to haggle for? or anything that people ask that pisses you off haha?
thanks, Tom

They will have an amount of money to give away, the figure depends on which specific car he's looking at. They'll either be able to give, say, £300 off the price of the car or £150 off, tax it and chuck in some new mats, see how it works?
GAP insurance is well worth taking out for £300 odd quid. He'll get it offered to him, tell him to take it.

When my mum bought her Ka she said can i get free MOTs because of the scratch.
The salesman said "sure, free MOTs as long as you have it"
...she made him write it down
10 years later she still has it and still gets free MOTS

Not much you can do other than point out all the bad (minor) points to the dealer and get him to knock money off if possible.
Also, never buy a car without leaving the showroom - you've got to leave and think about it, the dealer might be more open to offers if he doesn't think your gonna buy it.

If the car and the deal are both right for you what do you have to think about?

If you are desperate to buy it, then go ahead. If you still want more off it, then leave.

A lot of people that leave the dealership don't end up buying the car.
Quite often someone else comes along and buys it before they make their decision. It's a kick in the nackers for the customer if they didn't decide to go for it on the hope the deal may change.
Swings and roundabouts really.

You would say that Tim, that is your line.
Depends how much you want the car. I just walked away from a car today as on my figures I wanted to pay about 7 to change, the guy came back at 9600. Obviously that wasn't happening and I won't lose any sleep if someone else pays top dollar for the car.
I don't want it that much.

Too expensive. Buying and running. Lots more insurance and fuel.
Going to get something anonymous and comfortable for a bit.

Yes it is my line of work.
Something that people say to me is that they are going away to think about it, and that "if it's not meant to be then it's not meant to be". If it wasn't meant to be someone would have come in the day before and bought the car they wanted to buy.
Buying a car can be very much on emotion, it is good to take time to think so your heart doesn't always rule your head. When in the showroom though why not take time to have a break from the salesman to discuss your ideas, if the deal is right for you there's nothing wrong with going for it.
When someone comes in to the showroom and is excited about trying and possibly buying a car then i'm over the moon. I don't think "this persons keen lets not discount very much". Sometimes the car or price don't end up being right for the person, but atleast for me I haven't spent my time with a miserable sod. It's alaways better when people are enthusiastic.
Ian - You did right to walk away. At £2600 difference to change there was no way that deal was getting done. It may have been the right car for you but the price definately wasn't right.

Fair play Ian, is a big decision to make when it will cost you so much to run.
Pop - I'm not thinking so much from the dealer perspective but the buyer. If you go in there and get over-excited you'd buy any old thing........you sometimes need the time to walk away and make sure it is the right choice, even if its only a 2 minute walk down the road to get some fresh air.
If you've done your research and it all stacks up, go for it - nothing to loose!

aPk - Yeah it is definately a good idea to get some fresh air and have a think. Quite often I leave customers of mine for as long as it takes and I get on with other work away from my desk so they can chat without me being there.
Lets face it, it's usually a big decision which involves a large amount of money so it's not a decision to be taken lightly.

I want the car, so I did some figures in my head - 500 quid off windscreen, 6500 for mine, that makes 7 grand. I didn't think that was miles away. Guy could have either said yes or no right there. No skin of either of our noses.
Next thing I get drawn diagrams of how gap insurance works and what the risks are - he later valued my 22k Astra at 5250. I know there can be a difference in price and value
He then invited me back today to tell me the same deal. Eventually he offered to move 200 on mine and 200 on his but had put the price of a warranty up on the sly and also altered the term of the finance to make it look cheaper month on month.
Just a waste of time. I don't know why you can't walk in and say this much and they say yes or no. All this how much do I want to pay a month, how much do you want for your car, asking me stuff I don't even know. Its just so I say 200 and he does me a "boss" deal over 15 years at 15% APR but I look happy because I'm in a Merc for Corsa monthlies.
Edit - he also quoted 6% finance which is 6% flat not APR. Worked out about 11 APR when I calculated it?
Need more bloody honesty, its all smoke and mirrors.

I work for Arnold Clark Ian, its hard as a salesman to be overly pricey on p/x's.. As for £500 off the price of the car that would never happen in January, theres hardly any profit int he cars as it is at this time of year. His 6% flat could be dropped to 4% if you pushed him..

That 6% box in the computer screen was greyed out like he couldn't change it?
Realistically and assuming this guy still needs to eat, what figures could I walk in with with my signature already on the bottom?
Bearing in mind that car had some AC paperwork in the glovebox dated August 2007, which I assume indicates when it was received. Picture is a different dealership though not Liverpool?

Hate buying cars from dealers, 90% of them try & con you in one way or another, the other 10% that are genuine can never find me the right car. Id always buy private.

Give the guy his due though, when it looked too expensive he said 'what about something more practical'.
I said you mean CHEAPER. I can say that, I don't have to be diplomatic.
