Alright folks, im looking into getting a 172 cup in the next couple of months and was just wondering what the main competition is? I've test driven the fiesta st recently and i didnt like it as much as the clio. But im having some mental block and want to check out the competition. Cheers.

172, there isn't really a comparison unless you go 182/192, then you reach the rehlms of Corsa VXR, Mini Cooper S, Suzuki Swift etc..

They are both Superminis so yes it does.

This is not a Hatchback Vs Superminis.

i don't think the vxr is good value for money tbh, however i havent driven it or know alot about it. just dont fancy shelling out that many pennies for another corsa.

From persoanl experience the Clios are AWESOME cars, a good mate used to have one, it went really well with no flat spots in the power really! That was a phase1 172....

He then traded it in for a slightly fiddled with 182....that was just as good and was a phase2 i think...looked alot better, nicer looking dash etc....

I had a play with him in my Ibiza Cupra (200bhp) and there wasn't too much in it....i pulled away slightly.

AWESOME cars, id 100% own one but id want a warrenty with it...it broke ALOT.

A Corsa is a supermini steve, get with the times, technology has moved on, hence so has the size of cars? Haven't you noticed?

Should we speak to Renault to let them know their 192 isn't a supermini anymore as its bigger than the original R5?????

Corsa-Gus, too true, understand completly. The 172 isn't my favourite car, but in its class and YEAR, not much can beat it unless you go up a size (hot hatch).

At the time the original 172 came out, it had NO rivals in the same class.

The closest rival was the EP3 Civic Type R, but that didn't come along for a couple of years, and was quite a lot larger, even though the price/idea was similar.

Peugeot gave the 206 GTi more power to deal with the Clio, but other than that, and the Mini Cooper S, there's not a lot which was on sale at the same time as the Clio Cup, which can compete.

The Corsa VXR is a supermini though, but that's a 197 rival, rather than 172/182.

Remember the Clio doesn't have 172, 182 or 197 BHP though, it's measured in PS, so they all have less than the number would make you think.

I drove a Clio Cup and wasn't that impressed, it handled well, but not amazingly, wasn't particularly quick unless you wrung it's neck, and the driving position was awful, the seat was ridiculously high, and wouldn't go lower, also, the pedals felt wrong, and the gear lever didn't feel like it was joined to the gearbox.

How many people spend their whole life on a track Steve?

99.9% of people in this country buy a car to use on the road, not the track.

Point to point, on normal roads, they're as good as each other, whether you like it or not.

Totally agree. But i was impressed by the overal drive, but the typical french plastic interior let it down for me.
Driving position is totally wrong, but nothing a fixed bucket will sort.
Pedals were a little close
Gearbox handle/feel fealt cheap...

But still a great little car. Good little cheap track weapon with proven experience.

tbh, with the VXR torque, i should imagine on the ROAD the corsa is the quicker car. Clio will need to be at the top of the revs all the time.

But then were back to cost over performance.

The only similar STRAIGHTLINE speed is a Corsa 2.0 16v. But expect to be raped in any corner

I like the clios, however the 172 badge in reality is more like 160-164 bhp. handle well, better built that I expected, some areas of build quality are poor but not as bad as some other french cars. engines are solid.

Clutches are utter shite though.
