What the situation if an employer asks you to work outside and over your contracted hours?

My understanding was they can ask you, but your entitled to refuse?

Im sure its at your discretion Steve

Saying that if your asked and refuse it wouldn't be the smartest of things to do, unless they're asking you to do a load of extra hours

I'd only refuse if you have something important lined up or a prior appointment.

bascially there is a show that happens every year called bett im sure a few people off here know about it, only a small number of people from the office usually go to it, it doesnt really have much relevance to me and some other colleagues, anyway this year they are saying to people they HAVE to go, even though you have to get here for 7 and you dont usually get back til 6.

Now iv never been made to go to this and to be perfectly honest i just dont want to, or see the need, a few other colleagues also feel the same way, and we thin we are in our right to say we dont want to go.

Basically its a managers problem, because there has to be a manager on site if some people stay it means the they have to organise something to look after us here, but that is there problem

i think if we emphasised it, they would just turn round and basically say sorry you have to go, because they have a problem managing the building, its easier for them to try and force everyone to go, i was something to back my self up with before getting into a discussion about it

travelling working over the hours i cant be arsed for something that will not benefit me, i also resent the fact they are expecting employees to do more for simply to sort there own management problems as its easier for them, if they are taking that line then its easier for me to stay in the office

saying we have to go.

they know its not really relevant to us, they are only telling us we have to go because they will then need to find a manager for us

it the attitude of this place really, if you worked here you'd understand.

there attitude is, if they have a problem its up the employees to sacrifice to sort it out.

classic example is christmas times.

we were in a main building that was managed at all times, even over xmas. So if we wanted to work the normal days over xmas we could if we didnt want, or didnt have any annual leave left.

we got moved out into our own building with our own management.

now because a lot of people have the working days over xmas off, it was becoming difficult to find a manager to cover employees wanting to work.

the solution...make all employees take a complusory 3 days annual leave over xmas.

this is completely unfair especially to religions that dont even celebrate xmas.

and it means that i lose 3 days annual leave if i wanted to take it at different times of the year
