I assume you mean E39 M5, B5 RS4 and E46 CSL?

I think I'd have the M5, it's fairly widely regarded as the best saloon car ever made, evo magazine prefer the E39 to the E60.

However, the RS4 has a lot more road presence, and grip, and is more practical ()

The E46 CSL has a lot going for it too, and will be the most fun of the 3 no doubt.

It's a hard choice Nik, I wish I had to make it for myself

RS4....

CSL is not really a road car. No comforts. Spending that money on a 3 series, i'd want comfort.

M5, great car, but the most expensive, and every time i look at an M5 driver, its ALWAYS some realy posh git in a suit, never usually looking at what they are doing or really paying attention. Its very very boring looking. But that can also be a bonus... Far too complicated PC on board, if you want to go fast, you need 10 minutes setting the bugger up.

RS4 for me. Maybe even the estate.... Its got enough power to easily loose your license, it sounds stunning, no over complicated computer system. Just a nice V8, great looks, great interior, great car. Not the best handling car here, but as a compromise on the road, IMO, by far the leader.

If its something to be used on track AND on the road, i wouldn 't choose any of the 3.

We're talking E39 M5, which is the V8 before the current V10

I'd take the E39 M5. Big, comfy, and fucking fast. Despite all the electronic problems some have, over their non-M counterparts.

The M3 CSL is just a track car for the road. For that much money, you'd want an all-rounder.

Say 'what would you use on the track?', I'd say M3 CSL.

Don't really know much about the RS4's of that age tbh. And you can still get quite new E39 M5's.

So yeah, E39 M5

Apologies, not too up on my BMW model numbers bar an E30, E36, and E46

In which case, RS4, no contest whatsoever.......

What about a BMW 850 (or 840). A real 180mph car, all the comforts, and looks, and IMO, give it a few year, and they will start to rise in value.

close call really ive always liked bmws over audi and merc etc, weve even got them in the family.

ive been out in a M5 and its crazy power and noise and you can chuck the car around like it was a smaller 1 series.

BUT.... ive always had a soft spot for the audi i think its the looks.

would have the m5.

RS4,its classy yet aggressive, less common than m5's aswell I'd say also doesn't carry the "wan*er" image BMW drivers have.got amazing road presence and the interior easily looks the best out of all of them,BMW interiors all look the same and are quite boring.

M5 is also an amazing car but I just think the RS4 is a better all round car,CSL would be fun aswell but like other said maybe only as a second car or track car rather than everyday.

The m5 don't need 10minutes to set up to make it go fast at all!, there is really only 2 buttons to press and thats it.

for me it would be

M5
RS4
CSL
