What was with these engines. C20XEs I assume? Did they use a reverse head? What sort of power were these engines putting out? Just been watching some old BTCC videos on youtube and it got me curious.

The earlier ones had a 'normal' head, the reverse head didn't make a lot of difference to the power apparently.

i belive the reverse heads were fitted to allow better routing of the exhaust and to allow the engine to be mounted lower to the floor. its all down to aerodynamics under the car and handling

When the exhaust is on the side facing forward it pours hot air over the engine and more importantly inlet manifold as it gathers in the bulkhead area.
Having the inlets facing the bulk head restricts airflow, cold air supply and manifold design.
Facing the inlets forward allows for a greater freedom of angle of mounting and manifold design.
It also allows you to have a lovely great air box mounted directly in the flow of air in front of the vehicle to scoop up buckets of cold, dense air and shovel it into the engine.
Having the exhaust facing towards the bulkhead allows for a simpler, shorter, more efficient exhaust that doesn't have to curve under the engine first, in order to make it's way to the back of the car.
Also, because the exhaust doesn't run under the engine, the engine can be mounted marginally lower in the car to lower the centre of gravity Colin.

SVM why were crossflow engines ever introduced?

To ease maintenance and promote better combustion because pre-crossflows tend to suffer with hot spots/heat soak and which can lead to poor running James.
I believe the principles of squish and swirl are better implemented in a crossflow design.
Also, the flow of combusted gases works more naturally in a crossflow design.
That said, there have been some very impressive race tuned Anglia engines.
