Basically been umming and Erring over this, as I was gonna sell my car. But then I started looking around for a replacement and couldn't find something that'd be an adecuate replacement...

my gearbox is in a bit of a sorry state at the moment (Pug! gearboxes!) - anyway, I have a spare Gti box sitting in my garage, so was just going to get that one fitted. But Seen a Gearbox with Quaife ATB diff fitted and Xsi Final Drive...

What this means is that... It has a ATB Quaife LSD ... (Limited slip diff), i.e. when one wheel goes to spin, it'll mechanically transfer the power to the other wheel, thus putting maximum power on the road at any time (which helps with the cornering, where usually accelerating hard on a bend spins 1 wheel)... These diff's alone are about £550 inv VAT... Then you have to get you crown wheel machined to fit it and the diff fitted inside your gear box (roughly around £140)... then you have to get the gearbox fitted to your car. So it's fairly expensive to do normally.

This gearbox also has a Xsi Final Drive. Which means that it's a closer ratio gearbox than the standard Gti box, closer FD = the torque turns the gears quicker... essentially it'll improve acceleration.

The downside is that it'll reduce my top end and mean that I'll be at higher revs at certain speeds than I would be with my Gti box.

For example...

I think currently (if I was to take my car to it's raised limiter 7800 rpm in 5th) I'd be able to do about 156 mph (if it ever got there) ... with the Xsi box I'd be doing 140 mph at 7800 rpm... Sounds stupid speeds anyway, but considering I use my car a lot on track it does concern me slightly.

At combe (not a particually long straight) I'm hitting 120 mph down the straight. At nurburgring I was hitting 135 mph (from when I dared to look down) ... maybe more. I'd hate to be near those RPM to get the car to do those speeds... (I rarely rev my car over 7000-7200 rpm as the power peaks at about 7200 rpm). It may not be too bad as although I may of been seeing 135 mph on my speedo at nurburg, I may of been doing only say 125 mph (due to inacuracies) and thus I'd not be near the limiter at that speed

... Final down side...

The gearbox is £625 and I think far away... and it's going to cost me about £160 to get gearboxes swapped...

Who thinks I should buy the quaife and who doesn't?

A part of me feels it's a lot of money to chuck at my car, as I know most of you guys think it's worthless lol. Athough I know my car embarresses a lot of bigger car's at the moment and with the diff it'd be even better.

Oh yeh ... also ^

Currently at 70 mph I can sit at 3500 rpm in 5th...

I believe at 70 mph I'd be closer to 4000 rpm with Xsi FD

Considering I mostly drive on motorways at 80-90 it concerns me slightly...

If you do a lot of motorway stuff then you don't really want to shorten the box.

Do it mate, you really will not regret it. The XSI box is only marginally longer than the 1.3 box I have. The LSD is so so much fun, really wish I could take you out in it. We definately have to meet up soon when we both have working cars! Im on about 4.5k revs around 70-80mph but its something ive got used to. Its definately worth the sacrifice especially if you plan on doing alot of track time. Saying that when you go back to the ring you might find yourself topping out around 130, the s1 box tops out around 120-125 but the acceleration makes it worth while.

£625 is a decent price mate, mine was £700 and its not much different. I would have snapped that up at the time. You will not regret it despite the price, makes cornering so so much fun!

You can supply a diff, machine a crownwheel, and fit my diff to my gear box for less than £625?

Not really. My car is quicker than both clio 172 and 182 in a straight line, and less 'chuckable' / nimble from what I've heard from people. There are people who had gti's etc and bought 182's and regretted it and went back... That were people with standard gti's, but my gti is no where near standard and with the LSD as well would eat any 172 / 182 on track with ease.

plus I don't really like the look of clio's. I was at one point totally tempted to sell up and buy a 172 cup, but just think I'd regret it.

If I buy this LSD, I'll probably keep the car, and just buy a 2nd car at some point in the future... then eventually completely track spec up the car, stripped, cage, buckets, Throttle bodies, wilder cams.

If you watch the vids of my car out on track last time I was at combe, it was definately holding its own out there, passing a lot of cars and only really being passed by a cossie and a evo.

Will think about it this weekend (providing it hasn't been sold) and talk to my parents (to see if they can speak sense to me).

Paul, I guess by the fact this thread exists that you haven't driven a car with a decent LSD?

Did you post in the wrong forum or something?

Who was that a reply to?

Firstly 'Out of my parents pocket?' - I don't live with my parents, I live in a shared house with 3 other people in Reading. Secondly I just thought I'd suggest it to them as they tend to help me out with things and could speak sense into me like "I thought you were going to sell your car" or "I thought you were going to spend your money on going travelling in a year" etc etc point out the things that I get blinded by impulse with.

and secondly... WTF? most of my driving is motorway driving? where did I say that?

I currently do about 35 miles a week My car sits stationary about 6 days of the week currently, I'm thinking I'll be doing this for the track days next year! - When I need to do loads of motorway miles again I'll get a 2nd car.

Plus, finally... After working it out, the difference between Xsi FD in 5th and Gti box is about 400 rpm.

Anotherwords ... if I currently do 70 mph at 3300 rpm ish, I'll do 70 mph about 3700 rpm ... not a big difference

should also still do 140 mph.

Robin that is correct, I get the theory, I understand and have heard what effect it'll have... I've been in my mates Integra DC5 and that thing turns around roundabouts the size of pennies with no problem! ... but I've never driven a FWD with a LSD.

Thought so, I reckon if you'd driven one, you'd not be asking

Might be worth blagging a drive in a car with one, you'll love it.

To compare, i just spent £2700 + delivery for a new straight cut dog box & plate LSD plus rebuild for my 106 so Euan's (my old) gearbox is a bit of a bargain IMO.
