As above, give Whittie his thread back and discuss this in here.

I totally agree with raising the speed limit to a sensible 80 or 85.

All motorway crash barrier (as far as I know) are designed to take impacts at 85 or below and brakes these days are much better than the Land Rover with all round drums that the figures in the highway code come from.

Opinions?

I think that the speed limit should be raised because of modernised cars as you stated.
Although some people's ability to drive at that speed comes into question.

some can drive pretty fast safely though

You can argue all you like, but it'll never change.

I'd love to see the limit go up, but there will be outcry from all the non-motorway drivers saying its too fast and it'll never happen.

But surely the amount of people that use the motorway outrule the "70 is way to fast" people.

I feel I can drive perfectly at 85.

I personally think 90. The thing is, the old biddies all do the NSL, which is 70, so everyone in the 2 outside lanes are effectively speeding, which is ridiculous.

Motorways and A roads are there to make progress are they not? Can't make much progress at 70

I feel more wary of people slowing down infront of you after they've taken 10 minutes to overtake you. I like to get into a rythm if motorway driving and it's easier when going about 80ish.

reaction time will always be the same so to speak but braking distances are drematically reduced since speed limits were set.

I feel motorways should go up and around all schools should be 20 with speed cameras aswell

The motorway limit should increase without a doubt.

Or at least have a motorway speed limit of between 70mph and 80mph is that makes sense. 70 is the NSL but 80mph is still ok. i.e. if you drive passed a police officer and you're doing 80mph it's ok, but it's suggested you drive at 70mph.

I'm not saying 70mph should be the minimum. Cars have definitely increased in safety, stability and what not. 80mphis a must.

Thats a lie, a teacher here has been done for 79 and my Dad drives up a strech of the M4 (J14-18 - hy gets off at 17) where you can be done for as little as 78 so papers/coppers say.

If they raise the limit, they will enforce it more strictly. When I was doing my patrol car design for uni, I spent some time with the motorway police, he basically said the following:

70 is the limit officially, but providing you are driving in a safe manner, we aren't interested if you're travelling at around 80. If you go around 85/90, expect a friendly message from the matrix sign in the back of the car, and if you're over 90, expect a stop.

If it was foggy or raining hard and they were hooning along a foot off the rear bumper of the car in front then I think it's justified.

Well one copper from the joint force that patrols the Midlands motorways. It's called discretion at the end of the day, my point is if the limit is raised, there will be less discretion available to each individual copper when it comes to dealing with speeders.

Aye - their speed limits make huge sense. And they have hardly any motorway patrols

They're like traffic wardens though, dumped there and manned by non-police staff usually, just interested in figures and profits rather than increasing road safety.

Out of interest, what does everyone average on the motorway?

I sit on about 80 most of the time, thats around 76 on my sat nav...

Corsash your right, but if they were enforcing 85 in an 80 or something, the motorways would flow alot better
