Motorists are being allowed to drive on the hard shoulder of a motorway in a bid to beat peak-hour congestion.
Drivers are directed to use the hard shoulder on an 11-mile stretch of the M42, from south of Birmingham and through Warwickshire, at certain times.
A 50mph speed limit warning over the hard shoulder between junctions 3a and 7 shows when the lane is in use.
Drivers first moved on to the hard shoulder at 0745 BST. The Highways Agency said everything "went well".
Traffic build up
Regional director Graham Bowskill said traffic started to build up during the morning at the northern end of the section, close to the M6.
"By 7.45am the systems were saying we needed to put traffic on to the hard shoulder between junctions along most of the length of the motorway affected by the scheme. That operated very well."
"The information goes onto gantry boards asking people to use the hard shoulder, then they move across and it allows them to go up to the next junction with less congestion."
The system had been a success, he added.
The agency has said signs on the gantries can be changed within seconds in case of emergency.
But Roger Vincent, spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said he did have some concerns, primarily in terms of safety because of the distances between refuges and in terms of people breaking down in one of the most dangerous places on the motorway.
"There are also concerns about whether the systems for getting emergency services to help people in terms of accidents will operate well," he added.

What a brilliant idea, and cheaper/easier then building another lane, but what a scary experience if you break down on the hard shoulder during one of these

Is this supposed to be new news? They have been doing this for years now and it's absolutely fucking shitting shite. I drive down the M6 then the M42 then the M40 to work. The ONLY place where there is congestion is the M42 because of those stupid speed limits they make you do. Everyone is driving all over the place and because there are supposedly speed cameras everywhere people seem to find the need to drive at 40mph under the gantrys. Wank.

Oh, plus, whenever somone breaks down they seem to stop wherever they like, I have seen vans stopped in the middle lane and the driver wondering about on the motorway

Its an old story but has been rehashed because the trial period was successful and they may now use it elsewhere/more widespread.

It's on 24 hours a day. They never turn them off. I have driven down there at 2am and i'm the only car on the road and there's still a 50mph limit. It's madness.

The M42 is a bit of a nightmare, even using the hard shoulder doesn't help.....there was an accident in the hard shoulder the other week ...so you can imagine what chaos that caused...took me 20 minutes to get from the NEC to the turn off for Solihull (1 junction)...usually only takes 5 minutes!!!

They close the whole thing off quite often if anything happens, which backs everything up so you can't even get off the M40.

The M40 is amazing. Though I think it's getting more un-marked Police cars on it now. I saw the coolest thing the other week. A Volvo with a roof rack on it, and hidden in the roof rack were blue Police lights

Ed!
I like the M40 because on many sections you can see for miles, open land to the side of the motorway, no bridges, less traffic.
The M4 on the other hand
But the M42 is just like the M25, its designed to make money (cameras), makes people look good (less accidnets because of less speed) and reduce emitions.
FFS just let us get on with driving!

There is that....the last time I was on the M40 someone had been pulled by an unmarked police car...it's far too tempting to put your foot down on the M40!!!

its been like this for years anyway at junction especially on the M42
Poeple queue along the hard shoulder to exit - granted not as dangerous as driving along it for a long period of time

Yeah every overhead signpost has a speed camera on them, not sure if they're active all the time or not. I actually live near derby just down in Bournemouth for Uni, I was driving down there once with the Sat Nav on and it was beeping every couple of seconds with camera warnings

Plus you can see the cameras on them quite clearly, it's just all of the gantries have speed camera signs and markings on the road. It drives me crazy going that that stupid road.
