Nothing stupidly fast or sporty. Just a nice-ish car with reasonable MPG & thats maybe lightly fettled with to make it that extra bit nicer
My friends after changing his car, ones that spring to my mind are:
Astra Coupe SE2 - Choice of either 1.8 or 2.2. More likely to be a 1.8 for that money though. Nice looking car, cool interior, decent enough engines
Also wasn't there another edition with a white/black alcantara/leather interior? What model was this?
Polo GTI - Nice cars, built well according to everyone who makes assumptions about them. Some nice lightly modified ones about too, dropped on standard wheels looks great. Quite underrated from what I hear
VW Bora - Nice alternative to a Golf which you see a lot of. Petrol ones are cheap & the diesel ones are dear, which is great if you're not obsessed about MPG. Not heard wether there any good or not though? Any isues etc?
Ford Focus of some kind - know fook all about these. But I'd imagine there are some coolish ones knocking about for that price?
At a push with some shopping around you could also include Lupo GTI, Ibiza Cupra & mk2 Clio 172 into this list. Although the Lupo is a bit small & the others might knock the insurance up
Thoughts please Or suggestions

Cool Focus for 4.5k? No.
SE2, 1.8 is the better one anyway, 2.2 is no faster and is a lot more to insure.
Polo is alright, gearbox is weak though I think? (jr?)
Bora is good, as long as you get a 1.8 or above.
I'd have an Ibiza Cupra TBH. Clio will probably be on the ropey side for that money (unless you're lucky) and there's no way you'd get a decent Lupo GTi for that either.

Can't remember who it was, might've been Ian, but Im sure I read on here that the 1.8 is gutless & the 2.2 is quite good

TBH, I wasn't that impressed with the 2.2, lacked a lot at the bottom end, the 1.8 felt better low down and that's where you need it really.
Mk1 Golf would be the wildcard, but if you do any sort of miles, you'd never manage with one, it's just not practical

Polo GTi
Same revy engine as in the Lupo all you'd have to do is lower it and has a decent spec as standard like climate etc

By cool I mean a nice interior & maybe some SE wheels. Not a super dooper spec'd RS or ST
A 1.8 petrol or something would be cool, or a diesel

Wasn't there some kind of issue with the interior though? (other than the fugly seats )
Something to do with the trim wearing really easily?

Oh, you'd get a decent 2 litre Ghia (or similar) for that.

you would be looking at the 150 V5 and not the 170 for that money.
I test drove a 150 V5 and the engine sounded electric
TBH didnt feel any quicker then your average 2.0 16v mondeo, although apart from sounding like a wind farm turbine it was very smooth.
