IMO I couldn't turn round to someone and say.
"Oh I had £10k to spent, I bought a Clio"
Just my opinion though.

Depends how old/low miled car you want. Is insurance a real issue becaus eof your age/claims?
10k can get you anything from a brand new supermini through to a 10 year old huge engined barge. Read some old threads, it's all been gone over before in the past, probably in the last day or two .

Like I say it can get you a new-ish "mild hatch", a couple of year old Hot hatch, or a 5-6 year old scooby/Evo. It's entirely dependant on how much you want to devote to running it as to what you decide.
My budget was originally around that mark and I was looking for Astra GSi's, then ended up taking the plunge on an Astra VXR on 0% finance .

Wouldnt take that long to get up to the price of the vxr with a 10k scoob/evo once you start modding/running/reparing

You forgot insuring - it was triple the cost of the VXR for a WRX scooby and most places wouldn't touch me with a barge pole .

Fair play but insurance would be part of the running imo
