So decided to get a beemer.
323i (2.5 litre) 1998 R reg. Absolutely mint car. No rust!!!!

Oh and for ian, its got Leggra interior.
Not bad for £3200 with only 55k on the clock and its so clean!!!!!
As for the power, well 170bhp engine( soon to be 200bhp ), doesnt have the 0-60 power but on the motorway its an absolute beast.
Handling, well coming from an ex 106 gti owner, i can say this can be chucked into corners just as much and come out just aswell, you just have to be brave and continue accelerating ( rwd )

might invest in a strut brace. Plans are to take the large throttle off the 325i engine and same with the manifold.
Engine remap and possibly a nice twin tail pipe.

Looks quite mint and with 55k on the clocks, it has a long way to go yet. Would look nice with the BMW boot spoiler on it to finish it off may be?!

its a 2.5 litre. There is no such thing as a 2.3 litre engine in the bmw range.

It's the same with the E46 316i and 318i. Same 1.8i engine, different tuning.

323 was badged as such on the older range even though it always had a 2.5
They re-named it the 325 (although I forget in which year this happened) Prob inline with the differences Reedy mentioned

Although I think you'll find the 316i was dropped in the E46 coupe line deano87
Smallest engine you can get now is the 318i (in E46 coupe)
Before 2002 the 318i was a 1.9 4 cylinder 118bhp engine - after this date it's a 2.0 4 cylinder 143bhp engine

Yeah, it was. I'm talking when E46 saloons first came out, on like a T/V plate. Dad was looking at getting one, and opted for a 1998 R 520i SE!
