went to local vaux garage today with the missus, to get some more info on it, finance options and have a proper look round one. After seeing all the pictures, having a quick glance at one at brands hatch i was in love. Spent half hour looking round the car in full, playing about with it we decided we dont like it at all Driving position is poor, hate the wing mirrors, the silly window behind the wing mirrors, the cheapy looking front grill. I expected so much but feel quite let down. Have not test drove it yet, we do still plan on doing that but im really not sure i could live with it. Instead, we ended up falling for an Astra SRI 1.6 Turbo in sapphire black If only they came with cream leather

Yeah I can totally understand budgets! I just think I'd choose something else over that!

Might take a trek over to Seat and have a looksie at a leon too, we havent chosen anything yet. We had out heart set on the VXR so now unless it proves amazing on the road we are wandering elsewhere (everywhere but VW) Given a budget of 16-18k, what would you get Marc?

just priced up a Seat Ibiza (5 door) FR, 1.8 20vT, i know the engines well anyway and with options it came in at under 14k, seems a good option. Need to speak to Corb, see if he still works for them

If you're saving for a house & wedding, your best bet is to get a car as new as you can, with 3 years warranty etc, which means no expenses apart from servicing, tyres etc which rules out a BMW imho.
I'm suprised you didn't like the VXR, because I loved it at Banbury. Even though there were other people around, I adjusted my seat to how I'd have it and quite liked it. I don't like with ANY new car how you sit almost in the middle of the car, so far from the windscreen & dash.
1.6t Astra sounds nice, and they look good too.
I'd look at an Ibiza like pow's though. Vag built, diesel power (so cheap on long runs) and not exactly slow.

See, i still have a soft spot for it in a way, but neither me or missus could get the seat in a decent enough position, same with my mate rich he tried aswell. MAybe its becuase we are not used to bucket seats etc. Maybe im just getting old

going to book some test drives next weekend for the following week, see how we get on. Fuel wont be a problem, tis quicker to walk to work for both of us than it is to drive 1/2 mile for me, 1 mile for her
