You get more miles to the gallon on a smaller less powerful engine, where is the confusion coming in?

erm, it should be? less BHP = less power = less consumption?

Don't take those figures as gospel, they'll be on a combined cycle as with every engine if you rag it you get less mpg and if you drive conservatively you get more.

not true. MY 306 gti (2litre) gets more mpg than my 1.6 16v corsa did (131bhp) witht he exception of stop start queues

Ok for the the ones amongst us who wish to be picky and not try and help the guy understand, FOR THE MOST PART engines that are smaller and less powerful return a higher mpg figure

gearing, weight in car, driver all affect it. those figures are a very rough guide. and higher MPG means you will drive further without filling up, therefore cheaper to run
*in theory

Keeping the revs down and changing gear sooner rather than later, helps!
Especialy in first gear i would expect, just dont take the piss and crawl to the speed limit, you know when people end up being right up your ass and less people get through the traffic lights

I am thinking of getting the clio 172 but the only thing stoping me is obviously the insurance but also the running of it ie petrol. Which is why i may go to 1.8 sri. but looking at figures in mpg should I not worry to much about the difference and look more into insurance

I get fairly high mpg but have a tiny tank, so I have to fill up more regularly than people with worse mpg and a bigger tank, disproving your theory.

ok john
172 likes to be driven hard, and when you do it does use a fair bit of fuel.

When driven carefully, work run etc, my Clio Cup would get up to around 38mpg and 42mpg on the motorway.

not really. the 3 cars all have similar sized tanks, therefore the one with less mpg is going to be filling up more often.
just becasue you grandad wagon has a milk bottle for a tank doesnt mean it applies to other cars.

So it's not as bad as people would imagine. As long as you don't rag it everywhere.
Overall should i not choose a the corsa sri over the clio 172 cause it has less mpg when it not miles off?

How far out are the parkers stats for your car then?
I understand they aren't very reilable.
