...but what is powder coating?  
i can recognise if somethings been powder coated...but how is it done, why is it done, how is it different to ordinary paint?
i was thinking of doing my rocker cover...because i like monsters one so wnt to know a bit more about it....DIY jobby possible?

i work in a poweder coating plant. powder is sprayed on to metal and sticks to it useing an electrostatic charge and the object to b sprayed is earthed, (think of magnets) and then baked in a curing ovan till it sets,
its far more hard wearing and durabel than normal paint and less likly to scratch, touch ups r a bitch tho

FFS make sure it gets acid dipped and not blasted, and the coater does not do the underside

Pwder coating is a method of coating metal at a very low cost in high volume.
The metal needs to be clean and free of contaminants so it is usually blasted with a media like sand or beads if it is not a new part, otherwise it can be cleaned with a detergant.
The metal is then electrostatically charged to negative polarity (I think). Then very fine plastic powder is sprayed in the general direction of the metal; Because the plastic powder is positively charged it will stick to the metal, a lot like a balon sticks to your hair if you rub it on your head for a bit.
Once the metal is coated with the powder it is placed in an oven to be baked off. A range of different temperature plastics are available. I just had a load of stuff done at 80 degrees so as not to damage rubber components.
The plastic powder melts and fuses to the metal forming a very tough resiliant layer which can generally only be removed in specialist processes like acid dipping.

A hell of a lot less than a painter. £30-£40 a wheel for blasting and coating. Though the finish isn's as special because it's an industrial process. However you can get metal flak powder coats and pearlescent stuff now....

In case you get a little bit of grit left in it which WILL kill your oil pump and then destroy your engine very very quickly.

it was we had to design them,cut them and powdercoat them  was very kool back then considering we where 15 and the teacher knew why we where making them still have it on my keyring makes me feel old...

It's not really specialist. If you have enough parts then it can be done as a job lot, or if you go to a place and want stuff done black then you can have it chucked in with another job as black is a pretty common colour to do.
