You can just take the M6 through Birmingham if you want to avoid it

yes you can avoid it just follow the sign, clearly marked everywhere
M6 (toll) and M6
Don't take this into consideration:
M6 Toll clear, M6 congested.... doesn't make any difference

we took it on the way to PVS too, was very quiet, there was also signs saying that the non toll M6 was conjested from like junction 11 to 18, so it was well worth it i think

read my post above...I do it quite often when going to Manchester, and these signs are just 'scams'

I think you'd be better to take into consideration the signs, and the time of day/day.
Weekdays 7am - about 6pm (save for the odd occasion during the day when people have decided not to drive like fucktards), if you need to be somewhere use the toll, otherwise use the M6. In rush hour Southbound J11-9 is mayhem, and can easily add 20-30 mins onto your journey!
Sometimes i prefer the Toll anyway as you don't have to go over the many raised sections of M6 which are shit and piss me off

would bloody hope it's a nice road if they're charging 4 quid a car just to drive over it once

- The M6 toll doesn't avoid J11- 18 .
(well it misses J11 just, but there's like half a mile in it)

Like i say it can be hit and miss - southbound i would avoid the M6, northbound isn't usually as bad
(btw, most of my village was chopped and changed by the M6 Toll being built, as I live about 2 miles form J11, and have worked/studied in Birmingham for the last 4 years )

It's ok going north on the M6 through Birmingham instead of going on the toll, but when you are going south at the moment there are road works. Also at peak times it gets very bust around north Birmingham and where the M5 joins on so you are better off paying the £4 if you don't want to sit around.
