sure you werent touching white nettles? look like stinging nettles but on the stalks are white little buds? they dont sting
also nettles only sting when you brush them, they have little hooks that come off in your skin

You need to break the spines on the nettle for the poison to come into contact with your skin. You do this by brushing against them, for some reason of you grab them then spines don't break.

All day yesterday was working outside near a big fook off bush of them, was plucking up courage to see if the myth is true, and i grabbed hold of one and pulled towards me and the rest followed and stung the whole of my fucking hand 
was gutted!
But Its TRUE they dont sting if you squeeze them tight! I cut a leaf off, grabbed it and rubbed it on my cousins arm FLMAO! 2 mins later he has big white lumps on his arms! he wasn't happy
