Got this on Monday - really don't want to do it for various reasons what could happen if I don't go?
Or if any one has done Jury Service what's it like and what do you have to do? - as the booklet is not really helpful!

I've done it, was alright but no two cases are the same so there is no exact rule for what you'll be doing
Take a book, or a magazine or PSP type thing, you sometimes have long waits

you just can't go....It's your duty to attend unless a valid reason backed with evidence.
As Matt H said for second part

Would this be a valid excuse:
I am self employed and work by myself. By attending Jury Duty I will have to close my business for the duration and will lose those days takings. If you are willing to compensate me for loss of earnings I will happily attend jury duty, if not, I will have to say no, no jury duty for Jamie.

I did jury service it was awesome!
Had two weeks paid off work, they pay your petrol and parking. You get £5 a day for food.
If you reject doing it now they will call you back up to do it again

I work in a Crown Court and see people try to get out of it everyday
To be honest, most judges only let you off if you have medical appointments or a pre booked holiday.
Anything to do with work isn't an acceptable excuse, unless it's a long trial (2 months for example), where-as standard service is 2 weeks.

thats is one of my objections - I'm not interested in the justice system and Jury Service should be done by people who are studying it or law as it would be beneficial
thanks for the replies as well, but I'm definatly going too miss one day on Thursday regardless

But the idea of a jury is so that the individual is put up in front of his/her piers (sp) and that the jury is a cross section of society.
If they were all law students then it wouldnt be really fair on the defendant

I see what you mean
Crikey Jamie - I hope you don't get Jury Service as that is alot of money to possibly lose - don't you have cover staff though?

My Mum avoided it, but then she is hard of hearing in one ear. Could try that excuse.

My mum got off with jury duty aswell, got her doctor to write a line. Your doctor will only do that if they feel its the correct thing to do & not just because you dont want to have to go

I'm not sure if my Mum needed a Doc's letter to confirm it or anything, was a few years ago.
