I just started taking the whey protein and i took it with half milk an half water, is it supposed to make you feel sick? Has anyone ever tried taking it with yoghurt or got any advice on finding the best one for me. Got this one from Holland and Barrett - Body Fortress Whey protein - Vanillia
Cheers

Holland and Barrat stuff looks crap to me, only about 25g of protein per serving. try it with just water like Laney said. If there are no guidelines on how to take it, i wouldn't have even bothered with it mate.
Try USN 100% whey, maximuscle promax is ok too, really nice tasting and no side effects. I think the sick feeling comes form the type of protien used, egg, milk, casein, etc.

You can mix protein powder with anything really, suppose it all depends on how strong the flavour is of the powder and the flavour of what your mixing it with. Try it an see what u reckon, let us know..

I think the "normal" measurement is about 50g? I'm not 100% on that though!

You could be lactose intolerant, do you know if you are/aren't?
And dont mix water and milk, have either/or not both.

I personally try and ingest 4 parts carbs to 1 part protein after a work out to replenish glycogen stores.

shakes are good for after workout as the protein/carbs will be injested quicker and they also normally provide a glucose spike too so aids in that aswell.

Personally i found taking half the recommended amount pre workout and then a full amount post workout saw the best gains.
So guess you just need to know the recommended allowance. Try a few different combinations see what works best for u.

Firstly i would recommend not buying from high street stores as the protein is likely not going to be as potent as the gear i will show you in a bit. Also you will not be getting very good value for money at all with high street stores. I swear by www.myprotein.co.uk.
On a bulk (and i do cutting too) you are suppost to take 1g protein to 1lb of body weight. Therefore I take one 30g shake at breakfast with ultra fine scottish oats, 30g shake at lunch, 40g shake before a workout, 30g after workout and 40g before bed. On non workout days i will have one in the eve and one before bed.
As i mentioned www.myprotein.co.uk, they are great because on your first order if you quote the promo code: MP20541 you will receive 5% off your order.
On the home page if you do a price match with these websites "www.sports-nutrition.net" and "www.bulkpowders.co.uk" you will find some very good deals.
The protein has recently in the last 2 weeks had a price spike for some reason - 2 weeks ago i could get 10lb tub for £23 now it is £32 (£32 is for NZ whey which is more expensive anyway, better tasting but harder to mix - goes more lumpy). So i would wait maybe a week to see if the price goes down - that was with the sports nutrition price match.
It is unflavoured, but banana nesquik compliments it a treat!!!

Are these shakes used alot? I don't know anyone using them, are they only used when bulking up? I want to lose weight and tone my muscle, i'm fairly broad so not wanting to bulk out just tone andlose weight! Do these come in handy? I obviously would like to make my muscles bigger but will these protein shakes just add weight?

you have 5 shakes a day to get your protein? You should really only be having 2 shakes a day to boost your protein intake, the rest should come from food sources.

Taken from the American Dietetic Association. (2000) Nutrition and Athletic Performance, Medicene & Science in Sports & Exercise. American College of Sports Medicine;
Protein requirements are slightly increased in highly active people. Protein recommendations for endurance athletes are 1.2 to 1.4 g/kg body weight per day, whereas those for resistance and strength-trained athletes may be as high as 1.6 to 1.7 g/kg body weight per day. These recommended protein intakes can generally be met through diet alone, without the use of protein or amino acid supplements, if energy intake is adequate to maintain body weight.
and from the same source;
Although resistance exercise usually requires less energy than endurance exercise, the total energy needs of athletes participating in strength training and bodybuilding may be as high as those of endurance athletes because of their increased body size and high levels of fat-free mass. In circumstances in which an increase in lean body mass is the goal, energy intake must be sufficient to meet the needs for muscle growth. Thus, many strength athletes may need 44 to 50 kcal/kg body weight/d, and those in serious training may have even higher energy requirements (more than 50 kcal/kg body weight/d)
