would there feel like there is much difference between a 1.4 sport and a 1.6 sport? just been getting a few insurance quotes and got a quote on a 1.4 that is pretty good, the 1.6 was way too much! there much difference then between these two?

baring in mind i now drive a 1.2 8v lol

a lot though, are 1.4 sports as tunable, e.g. would you get similar gains on engine mods?

The 1.6 is MUCH better than the 1.4

I had a tuned 1.4, a standard 1.6 was a better car to drive.

1.6 is out of the question, the insurance is just too much, teco wont even insure me untill im 21 on a 1.6 and apparently there are other companys that have the same policy now!

i know exatly how you feel JayT, hopefully by the time the gsi is on the road i will be 22 so might be cheaper.. getting quotes of £1500 or 2k and i aint paying that, i was thinking about asking my mum to insure it and me as a 2nd driver till im a bit older. some insurance companys let 2nd drivers build up ncb's so that would be handy, i think directline do it

Jay, if you can't insure a 1.6, you can't insure a tuned 1.4

It's not the power that's important anyway, I had 116bhp from my 1.4, Teddy had 106bhp in a 1.6, his car was quicker.

How similar are the 1.4 and 1.6 engines in terms of physically, as I'm am thinking of doing a straight transplant. What parts would I need to upgrade?

They are identical Dan, you need the engine and the ECU, EVERYTHING else is the same.

i've only ever driven a 1.4 once, just felt unfulfilling compared to the 1.6.

i insure a 1.6 at 18 with a years named driving experience and pass plus for £1100 TPFT.

I did it in a week (on and off, about 2 days actual work) with Broster on here, who has also done it.

Valid questions and all. But I wouldn't rush into upgrading because you're bored and what not.

I know I'll be stuck with my 12v for a long time BUT I am prepared to build up my no claims and move on to bigger and better things, without spending a fortune on insurance.

If you did upgrade to a 1.4 because you can afford the insurance, I'd keep it for a very long time.

So you litterally just replaced the 1.4 16v engine with the 1.6 16v engine, replaced the ECU, and that was it? What about the gearbox?
