The Government has created a new law..

Buying tobacco cannot be bought by under 18's from October.

Don't smoke myself, but what do you think about this?

I think its a great idea to be honest.

Discuss.

Good Idea, but it won't work.

I smoked when I was 14, never had trouble buying, so a 16 year old won't struggle now.

Although, that's 2 years better than now I suppose.

I think they should remove the limit totally, then kids at school wouldn't do it, because it wouldn't be 'cool' as they aren't breaking the law...

you do anyway.

think about when you were 16 and drank alcohol, when you got to the legal age, it wasn't as good...

same applies to smoking, if it wasn't restricted, people wouldn't try it.

Good idea in theory.

Pointless though. I used to know people who started to smoke when he was 9. He'd either rob cigs off his mum or buy them off other kids in school, who rob them off their parents.

At the end of the day kids can still get hold of alcohol so they'll still get sigs.

IMO of course.

Since the ban on smoking in public places came in, thats all you see outside all the pubs and clubs, groups huddled round in the pissing rain soaking wet all for the sake of a few puffs on a stinking fag!!!

Putting the age limit up probably won't make that much of a difference, but banning it in Public places has

The advert shouldnt be 'if you smoke, you stink' It should be 'If you smoke, your a twat. Now F.O.D'

some laws make me laugh, im 17 and dont spoke but drink every other weekend in the local [ub, since i was 15 i have never had a problem getting served alchol in the local shop or pub, I think smoking should be banned in all public places to be honest, its not nice walking past a group of people and having to inhale it,

Yeah i say ban it. BUT, a lot of tax is put on them. So how are the goverment going to replace the taxes? You may say through the NHS. Personally i don't think it will save as much on the NHS as they gain in taxes ever year.

I know a total smoking ban would never happen and can see why cos of taxes.

Be good if they could cut road/fuel tax and hike up smoking taxes to make up for it. I dont know the ins and outs of it so dont know if that would work

Up smoking and alcohol tax, and tax people over 30 who dont have jobs (and dont have children/disabilities)

Lower fuel and road tax
