its due to the drain hole in the chasis leg that is exactly, well probably was originally, where all that rust is. lots of built up of water etc causes it

It looks worse than it really is, most of that is just surface rust. A lot of the ridges are just underseal peeling back.

So, recommended course of action - cut back any rust, weld some plate in there (what thickness) and underseal over again? Do I need to redrill a drain hole?

Yes Gregor, we discussed this in some detail recently didn't we . I was crapping myself thinking the car was in trouble. Got it welded afterwards for the princely sum of £30 (sorry mate, I know you paid through the nose)

Come summer, out comes the wire brush on drill and the Hammerite and waxoyl and the whole underneath is getting done.

EDIT: I'll take my camera out later and see if I can get a decent shot of where mine was welded.

As was asked above......does a drainage hole need to be redone or not then?

yeah its too early in the morning, but still it looks quite oily. Im no mechanic but usually oil stays inside.

My gearbox has a small amount but its not that bad.

Common trait of Vauxhalls...sump and gearbox leakage....

Anyway, took a pic of my rail...here it is:

It was pretty bad before it got welded and sealed but I feel a lot better that I can finish it all off in the summer without too much worry.

It's wet, but it's also leaking, best of both worlds

Ash, how difficult is the petrol tank to change ? As i have a slight dent in mine since my coming together with a brick, so was thinking about changing it in the summer.
