Massive earthquake has hit in the ocean near The East coast of Japan. Tsunami is on its way and is expected to hit Japan and Russia in the next hour.

Japan is evacuating its people from low lying areas

Thats only the first wave mate ... they dont know how bad its going to be yet. Japan is probably the best prepared country for this kind of disaster so hopefully they will get people evacuated in time.

Its quite a big earthquake and its not so much about the height of the wave-- its the speed and power they move with

hopefully its not much bigger as sure they can handle a 6.5ft one.

As said though, if anyone could handle it then Japan probably can!

people ( in general) don't understand Tsunamis; they assume they're just a big, high wave. The boxing day Tsunami was only 50cm tall over the majority of its fetch. However its the fetch of the wave (length) which determines its final height.

As the long wave approaches land and hence shallower wter, the front of the wave slows down; the back continues at the same velocity, effectively causing the back to overtake the front or to build up in height. A tsunami wave isnt particulaly high until it reaches the shore.

6.5ft is their prediction for when it hits the shore though, from what that link says anyway...I understand how they work, not sure how anyone cant after all the stuff that was on about them a few years back.

Wouldn't matter if its one foot high, an extra foot the width of your coastline and a few miles back out to sea is still loads of water.

No reported injuries as yet though I don't think.
