Drove over a brick on my way home last night, which has dented the underside of the car, bent the heatshield and most importantly, virtually removed the flange between the manifold and the cat and put a massive dent in the cat. I've been to the only garage open on a sunday and they seem to feel that i need a new manifold and cat.

They have quoted me £238 fitted for both parts. Is this the going rate (as no other garages are open to ask) or can just the flange be changed by welding a new one in ??

Would the dent also affect my chances of getting an MOT ?? Its not too big, but noticible. The car still drives and brakes in a straight line, so i think the exhaust took the brunt of it...

Difficult to say without seeing it but that joint often rots away. New cat is approx 100+vat downpipe approx 40+ so price may be a little high but not way out.
When mine went on my 1400, i wasnt prepared to spend that sort of money for a poxy flange so i...

.. welded them together

It needs to have some flex and it worked a treat.

Its right next to the cat.... Its probably dented it about an inch up, and the whole area is probably about 4 inch square.....roughly the same size as that fuckin brick !!!

Will the dent on the cat affect its performance in any way ??

it depends only time will tell. If it has cracked the core it may break up and rattle its way through your exhaust. In this case the cat will not be doing anything at all.

yeah, i thought that might happen over time. It did get a proper clout though and ceramic is notoriously brittle, so may as well get it all sorted....

On the upside though, i'm glad i haven't got my blueflame on yet, because i'd be a bit gutted if that had got damaged !!

yeah, i've been on there.... they seem fairly cheap, but most of the garages around here say that if they don't supply it, they don't fit it, so i think i'm just gonna get it all done and sorted on wednesday when it goes in for a re-test...

To be fair, it was a sizable brick, but it was just as i came around a corner so i couldn't stop or swerve really...

I haven't got time to fix it myself before its re-test ya see, so i'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and pay the money

Bend the heatsheild back yourself.

Cat damage wouldn't worry me, thats not going impair flow at all.

Flange - looks normal?

I need to do something though as its blowing and sounds rubbish !! I might ask if they can just change the flange then, because thats the only noticible problem i can see that is causing the blowing. Drove it to work today and didn't smell anything that would suggest the cat was on its way out...
