If so I could do with a bit of help...
A group of us bought a holiday this summer and one of us couldnt come just before we were due. So we didnt bother getting a refund and decided to use the baggage allowance between the rest of us as we had paid for the ticket.
At the counter the woman charged us for extra baggage even though we had this other ticket with us and had bought that allocated allowance.
We wrote to the company when we got back and just got a reply this morning. They are telling us that as the person didnt show up they are allowed to sell ont his seat and we dont get the allowance, even though we hadnt cancelled the seat or asked for a refund and had the ticket with us.
Is this normal proceedure?

That's correct. If there is no-one there, you can't use the baggage allowance.

My sister and her boyfriend went on hols few weeks back and took one suitcase between them. They got charged for being over weight limit for one suitcase. When they said well its for 2 of us and we are under the limit for 2 suitcases the check in woman said tough basically.

Idiots Reason for the above is because of the health and safety requirements for the baggage handlers. Only allowed to lift a certain amount.

Do they use the extra money to pay a big strong man to lift the heavier bags?

I think it depends how full the flight is, and what it's carrying. If it;s a light flight they won't be as harsh.

they charge extra because more weight=using more fuel etc. i know you're saying "afew kilos isn't going to make much difference" but if everybody does this it adds up to several tonnes etc

thats like going to the pub and buying a pint for a mate you are expecting to join you, only for him to not turn up, so you dont let anyone else have his pint.

Yes, but the seat was paid for in full and wasn't sold-on.
Therefore even with the baggage allowance from the other person used, they've saved weight by having an empty seat in the cabin.
There are some security issues, namely that they've not checked the passport for the person in charge of that other baggage etc., ie. there has to be a "simple" system to try and ensure safety.
If you could buy up extra seats just because you wanted baggage there's nothing to stop someone buying loads of seats just to freight loads of stuff about. I'm sure there's some reasons why this wouldn't be a good idea but I can't think of them right now.

planes overbook every flight because they know people wont show, they like to fill the plane for definate, so the extra seat was probably taken anway

people should have to get weighed and that should be takien into consideration. Imagine getting changed for being 5kg over weight on your bags, then getting on the plan sat next to someone who has weighed in at 130kg (20 ish stone) and you way 65kg (10 stone).

Yeah good point Steve, there was actually probably someone in that seat having been put on after the gate closed, who had bags.

Yeah but they've kept their options open so far as putting a stand-by person on.

Depends on company policy really. I know you can't have baggage on a plane for somone who isn't on the plane, otherwise you'll end up with another Lockerby, with that in mind you can't use thier baggage allowence. Also, airlines always over book the plane because so many people don't turn up to fly.
