does it piss anyone off that actually lives up north when in the film Layer Cake... they say 'someone up north' can buy the pills and actually the people are in liverpool... who thinks liverpool is north in the UK?

It is, I'm considered northern, and I'm from Bolton, which is kinda across from Liverpool. Admittedly you're more northern than me but it's just details.

I know what you mean, i go to Manchester loads, and i dont see it as northern, although i know its north west.... north for me is Leeds and above

Liverpool is in the north, the same as Birmingham would be classed as the south in a film.

It's exactly 111 miles from Wigan to Coventry, so I guess about 90-100

dunno, but what i mean, is Birmingham is in the lower half of the country, the south half, and manchester/liverpool are in the upper half of the country, the north half...

its marginal, but its definitely south as opposed to north

To me it really depends what context 'up north' is used in. If you looking at England as a whole then its more complex but i'd consider liverpool as certainly up north.
But really, it does depend all on the context. Like im from Birmingham but i currently live in Plymouth (with friends), the others who are all local to the area often refer to me as from 'up north' as Birmingham is much more north than Plymouth is, even if Birmingham itself isnt 'up north'.
