Pc 'was speeding on right roads'
A policeman accused of driving at 159mph was speeding on the "right" stretches of road, a court has heard.
Pc Mark Milton is standing trial for dangerous driving and speeding after cameras on board his unmarked car clocked him driving at high speeds.
But former police driving instructor Douglas Boulton, who viewed a video of Pc Milton's driving on the day, said he saw "no problem with it at all".
Pc Milton, 38, from Telford, Shropshire, denies both charges.
Second trial
Mr Boulton, a defence witness, questioned the accuracy of the camera's speedometer and told the court that, in his experience, police officers trained on normal roads and were expected to drive "as fast as it was safe to do so".
He said advanced drivers, such as Pc Milton, were expected to keep up their skills.
"Michael Schumacher at the end of the Grand Prix season doesn't sit down and do nothing for six months - he still practises and tests because he has to keep himself at a particular level."
He said after viewing the video of Pc Milton's driving on the day: "His driving, as far as positioning, I find no problem with it at all.
"The speed when he did it, he did it in the right places."
Pc Milton, who was driving a 3.2l Vauxhall Vectra on 5 December 2003, is facing his second trial.
He was originally cleared of the same charges but the High Court overturned his acquittal and ordered a retrial.
The case was adjourned until Friday.
I quite liked the Schumacher comment Totally irellevant though as they have training all year round surely? So why does he need to do it in his spare time...
To be honest i don't know exactly what training police receive so I can't accurately comment on whether or not he can drive at those speeds but i'm sure other people on the road wouldn't be ready to anticipate a car doing those speeds in terms of how fast it comes up at you, overtaking .etc
Not usually one to moan but it is quite clearly double standards! How one person can be prosecuted and lectured for doing 76mph or something minutely over the limit and then another person does 159mph and it's basically publicised as being ok because he's trained for it.
I think this was posted up before when he got away with it but the High Court overturned his acquittal and ordered a retrial.
Thoughts .etc

Michael Schumacher has the ability to drive faster and better than the police officer, what would happen if he were to be caught doing the same speeds on public roads?
its a bullshit comment to make!

Fucking pathetitc why should police be able to endanger other drivers lives when not in an emergency situation. the amount of times you watch police camera action etc they always say 'the police had to drop back because of public's safety' what is to stop someone pulling into the outside lane it might not be too easy to spot a car coming up at 160 if you're doing 70

Just because he is a PC, doesn't mean he can do double the speed limit, like you say Schumacher would be banned from driving etc etc.

disagree, being trained to drive at those speeds in an F1 car on an F1 track is entirely different to being trained to drive those speeds on public road, in an 'everyday car' with traffic, people around in persuit of someone.

so your trying to tell me that an everyday bobby on the beat with police driver training has more natural driving ability than one of the greatest ever racing drivers?

I bet you Schumacher could murder any police "advanced" driver on any road!

I'd bet you any driver sitting in an F1 car on the starting grid would not only be quicker than an advanced police driver but would also have far quicker reaction times and would be able to react more quickly and safely than any police driver on any road could.

exactly, there should be no reason to be doing those speeds on the road unless they are pursuingm doesnt matter how good the driver is, if a family car is round the bend and he hasnt seen it the best driving skills in the world will not prevent the choas that will ensue

1) the copper wasnt comparing driving skills to schumacher, he was comparing trainging
2) you cant compare the two in this sense as its entirely different types of driving!
3) its not an everyday bobby, i knwo theres someone on here whos going through the driving tests for police and will say how hard they are, and how much of an improvment it does on your driving. not all coppers are trained to drive at that speed.
4) lost count of how many people on here have posted about doing 100mph + in their corsas etc (and no im sure everyone doesnt have a convenient private airstrip in their garden), so are you really telling me if you were a fully qualified police driver alone at night on roads you KNOW, with a 3.2l tuned car, you'd stick to 70? i think not!
more flaming please

I'm sorry but 100mph is not 159mph most police advance drivers would argue that it's not a safe speed for anyone to travel on public roads imo. Fair enough if it's called for but it wasn't end of. There's always the element of other road users.
I don't givea fuck about the schuey comparrison that is a lame ass PR exercise to try and get acceptance from joe public for what was a stupid bit of driving.

talked to my mate who is a copper the other day about this,
he was saying that it does seem ridiculous but they dont actually have a test track or anywhere private to get used to a new vehicle, top speeds etc.
still dont agree with it being done on public roads but i appreciate the need they have to get used to the car in the environment that they need to use it in

Bollox if car clubs can stump up the cash to use track days etc... i'm sure the revenue earned through speed cameras and on the spot fines would pay for this and to simulate conditions on a race track. Not the public roads

How often does a advanced trained copper ever have to give chase at 159mph? I'm sure it is very unlikely to ever occur in his career so why should the smarmy prick get off with that....... theres a traffic officer on my street an he is a right twat ........ could tar them all with the same brush!!
