bloke who lived in house before us had solar panels put on roof which just heat the water. past few days the tanks been reading 90c and today hit 100c for a short period. hopefully its ogt some form of pressure release valve.
after tommorows heatwave i intend to get in from work and make a cup of tea from the tap
only problem is the showers never cold even when turned right down

Wouldnt it be possible to get some sort of battery storage system and get the pannels to charge those and only have it heat the water for a few hours per day or something? Would be better use of the power and with the water that hot it could melt the ballcock in the water tank (seen it happen before).

Im guessing that the solor panels are supplying power to the emersion heating element in the hot water tank.

in that case you could harbour the energy feed to the immersion heater element, and use it for other things, would need some sort of regulator on it though.

you can sell unused units of energy back to the national grid.
same with wind turbines.

its probably solar heating, where pipes are in the solar panels and it gets piped around and stored in hot water tank...its the usual way of doing it!
but was working the loft a few days ago was 38c and was sweating like a git!! had to hult work on the flooring and network stuff for a few days until we get rain again
