Now I need to leave it a couple of weeks to mature then I'll get some plants and fish Its my 1st fish tank so its nothing special at the moment!
Still haven't decided exactly what fish I'm going to get

Nice poster too

I have little knowledge. I've got a book and a mate that I can get advice off but thats it really Just having to learn as I go along...
Tank and cabinet cost £160 with free delivery. Its a Juwel 96 litre tank and comes with all the filters, the heater, the pump and light built in.
Then spent about £60 so far on the gravel, background, air pump & ornaments.
Maintenance is doing things like water changes (think it 10-15% every 2 weeks), doing tests to check PH, ammonia levels etc. trimming plants, changing the filters. Cant remember everything or how often so thats why I have a book thats got it all written down.

Couple of weeks my arse. Put some Cycle Start in it, this adds the bacteria that the filters need. You can get going in a few days.
PS, once you get going, you don't need to check levels of ammonia etc.

Yo mate good to see you went ahead there dude, hope the advice helped.
Anyway,, are you going with tropical or marine fish?
Also make sure that those ournaments have been washed loads in HOT water not soap or anything!!
Also let the sand and everything settle, give that about 3-5 days.
After that ill give you more advice but if your going tropical then you need to get some plants in there when the sand has gone down.. This will get you on the 1st step of the cycle.

I have that tank.. Changed my filter to an external jobbie, lots better.
I have got White sand, lots of plants, they always need to be cut back as they grow so quick. Got real nice piece of bogwood as well.
My Amazon claw frogs are the best..

Greg - I don't bother anymore. I just make sure the tank is always clean, with no rotting leaves etc left in there. And, change the water often.
I remember we spoke about Marine a while ago. Seems a nightmare.
Matty - Good choice of tank

I'm going to leave it 2 weeks before I add the fish as I would rather be safe than sorry.
The ornaments have had plenty of washing out and I didn't use any soap or other chemicals on them.
I would like to get some plants in there next weekend to fill it out a bit and let them have a chance to settle in a bit before the fish are added. Any advice as far as they are concerned?
I am going with tropical fish. Marine is something I would like to move onto in a few years when I have gained alot more experience.

I think your right there with your choice mate.
Your best option is to go to your LFS as there are all different types of plants some that give good oxygen aswell.
Seems like your on the right step buddy!
Dean - Yeah if tanks been going a long time then all should be ok mate, thats what I done.. Just keep your eyes open for white spot or if a fish dies, this can mess everything up again.

I filled mine out with lots of plants early on. Bad idea, you need to put a couple in, and see how they grow into the tank.
Otherwise it looks a mess.
Always pull out the dead leaves, and make sure they don't block the top of the filter box where the water pulls in.
I would advise changing the bulbs as the standard Juwel ones are shite. I changed mine for one flora bulb (plant growth) and one moon glow (slightly blue).

Thanks for the advice.
I read that to start the nitrogen cycle off without the fish in its a good idea to put a sprinkling of fish flakes in there to get the bacteria going. Is that right?

I dont want loads of plants at the moment. Just 3 or 4 to give the fish a bit of cover and make them feel more at home. Then can always add more later

If you have the x2 bulbs options in there I'd go for one ultra white and one nu-blue. Gives it a nice finish.
I have x3 lights in mine but you need that for marine.

bang afew drops of tap water conditioner in and a whole bottle of (small i think) stress zyme 1/3 today, tomorrow, day after and 5-7 days latet you can put your first fish in.
go for some hardy fish like harequins or danios, quite cheap and will get the bacteria in your tank going, leave a week or 2 then try something else.
the hardest part is getting the tank established. after 5/6 months you can put pretty much anything in the tank aslong as they live together lol

Cheers!
I put tap water conditioner in the water as I added it. It also has an anti stress formula in it.

Meant to put conditioner in to get rid of the chlorine and any metals that could be in the water.

Point the nossle upwards dude so it ripples the top of the water.
I would also get another pump to stick on the opposite side of the glass for more airflow.
