If you can afford it go for the Audi as the interior and exterior is that bit nicer.

They are the same price per spec at the mo TBH.
So look in the price range and choose on spec per pounds

golf, prefer the look and a lot more subtle mods available for them to make them stand out. Only audi if s3? but obviously not for 5g.

A3, has to be. The golf is too fat for what it's trying to be (a sporty hatch) where as the A3 more a comfortable cruiser.
For 5K i'd guess your looking P/R/S Reg AGU 150bhp but, if you can afford it, try to get the facelift VVT 156Bhp Drive by wire because with a quick re-map you should be looking at the 200bhp mark rather than the 180ish of the non VVT.
Oh and don't what ever you do buy one in green they look fookin awfull
