how the hell do you go about doing it? i know millions of people would apply for the job if it was actually advertised but still, theyve got to find the drivers from somewhere. btw... i mean testing normal manufacturers cars, not powerfull cars that ex pros will be testing. i wouldnt want to go into the journalism side of things, just testing cars for smaller companies and feeding back with opinions on every aspect of the car.
this may generate a lot of gay comments but im not really bothered. i want info

I'd say you would need experience in the motorsport industry no matter what car it is.

i know alot of people woudlnt want to be stuck in boring cars all day and traffic jams etc, but that wouldnt bother me, id prefer it to a boring 9-5 routine with a manager moaning at you all day

.
probably, was just wondering. would a series of advanced driving courses not even be classed as enough experience?

If you were given a new nissan micra to test, and you were required to give feedback on every aspect of the car at the end of the test drive, do you honestly think you would be able to?

erm yes ofcourse? dont you like them ? lmao, yeah all you can do is compare it to other cars of equivalent value, with pros and cons (if there are any pros) and honestly say if you think it can compete with the rivals

most test drivers are ex racing drivers.
most normal cars are tested around test centers that have just lots of bumps etc, lots of different tests etc that'll do the effect of thousands of miles of driving in a week or month.
Boring

lol was just wondering thats all. cant imagin ex racing drivers being arsed to drive shit slow cars that look gay, hence why i thought there would be opportunities for people with advanced driving certificates to test drive cars.
yes it may be boring but its better than office work anyday, which is what im stuck doing now

Thing is, whats your techincal knowledge like?
if you drove it, would you be able to feel something is wrong or different and would you be able to suggest the camber needs adjustment, the front wheels need to be toed out slightly etc etc.
I think most cars these days are modelled virtually with computer systems to check everything's gonna work ok, then designed and built - then driven on test courses to simulate thousands and thousands of miles and different conditions - then possibly tested on normal roads - then released.
I don't really see them making a car that's gonna be shit though, so most of it will be based on previous cars / previous knowledge / lots of data crunching and 3d modelling / physic tests etc.
Now what I'd like to be is a test driver that tests car round the nubrurgring - would be awesome!

My mates dad used to test for Ford. He worked there all his life on the production line and got promoted in to R&D, then on to that aspect of the work, sometimes testing cars off the line, sometimes more interesting stuff. He had an Escort Cosworth for the weekend back in 93/94ish which was but we more regularly saw him pootling about to North Wales and back in Fiestas and Escorts.
He had to write a full report on it all though, loads of forms etc. Its not just a quick rag about.

Yep doubt they would let some kid with no driving experience do road tests, as already said - ex motorsport race drivers for the serious stuff & employees that have worked there way up to that position & know what there talking about for the run of the mill!!

Family friend is an auto tester at Aston Martin, lucky fucker, been to south of France and Norway doing hot and cold testing on the DB9 IIRC. Worked before that for Rover doing similar stuff, but he had to be with both companies X number of years before he could take on the role.

alot of the tests are done on rigs. When i was at Jaguar they used to have a rig which poured water onto the windowscreen asthough it was raining and the car was doing 60mph.They just left it running for hours.

I would expect a test driver to either be a designer or an engineer.

Well to be a tester for a magazine you have to be a journalist... It's still a profession that you have to work up to.

jambo dont get your knickers in a twist, obviously cars have to be tested, but i didnt want to go into the journalism side as its gonna take the rest of your life to make a name for yourself, id rather be in the background, just doing the driving and review type work. but not reviewing for magazines, as i doubt anyone has much chance of getting a job doing that tbh.
i was only enquiring thats all. god theres some miserable old bitches on here lately
