In the past week I have had to deal with two account compromises.
In one case, the password was reset and the email address which the password was sent to was read by someone other than the account holder. The email address was not secure enough.
In the second, the password was guessed.
We take security quite seriously here, but we are being let down by users not adopting the same position. There is no technical measure which we can put in place to mitigate against this. The solution is quite simply that users take more care. This will save time in cleaning up and pursuing anyone who engages in such activity.
For the record, I had a shortlist of candidates for the first one within about 20 minutes of cleaning the mess up, and that list is now being investigated by the academic institution where they all attend who I'm pleased to say have helped me greatly in this.
The second is Lee Leg, who is banned and who if I've any money left after PVS I'm going to sue under Computer Misuse Act section 1.
If you don't want this to happen to you, quite simply get a better password and use it on computers which you don't trust. If you are thinking of doing it, don't be surprised if you get a phone call or better a nice letter on some headed notepaper. There's currently no legal precident which way such a case would go and whether damages would be awarded. I'm interested to find out and with the trend appearing to be on the up, I might need to do so.

1.(1) A person is guilty of an offence if -

(b) the access he intends to secure is unauthorised; and
(c) he knows at the time when he causes the computer to perform the
function that that is the case.
(2) The intent a person has to have to commit an offence under this
section need not be directed at -
(a) any particular program or data;
(b) a program or data of any particular kind; or
(c) a program or data held in any particular computer.
(3) A person guilty of an offence under this section shall be liable on
summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months
or to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale or to both.

Makes you wonder why people do such things when the consequences could be so serious

sue him....since he will have to pay for the costs if he loses...and if you have sufficient evidence, make this an example for any future ones
