For the past years Toyota's smallest car in production, was demonstrating to all other motors' companies how a car should be! Simple, attractive, fast, reliable and all these in a compact hatchback design with a reasonable fuel consumption.
The Starlet has written in its CV many official Toyota participations to the world rally, along its "'bigger brother" Celica, with really competitive results.
I own a Toyota Starlet (EP91) Glanza V Turbo, made in June's 1999 (unfortunately last production). Since then it was replaced by Toyota with the same category Yaris (Vitz).
Unfortunately the GT Turbo versions of Starlet were never so popular in Europe, so the only way to get one was to buy an imported one from Japan.
The Glanza V hides under its hood a 1331cc DOHC, 4cyl, 4E-FTE engine, accompanied with CT9b turbo. This setup makes the 920Kg beauty output 133bhp, and accelerate from 0 to 100Km/h at the impressive time of 6.8 seconds. This pocket rocket is mechanically flawless like every Toyota.
Some features coming along with the Starlet – Glanzas V are electric windows, electric mirrors, ABS, climate control (optional), semi-bucket seats, 14" alloy wheels, dual mode turbo (0.65bar high/0.45bar low), the beautiful body kit which makes it scream that it is GT version, and much more.
I own my Glanza since the beginning of 2002, and so far I had not even the slightest problem. It has been my dream-car since 1999 and it still is.
Maybe its interiors are not that rich as many more modern cars of a higher class, but I'm sure that its gorgeous GT style, and performance will impress everybody.

Bit of a sleeper
Although I'd look at Pulsar GTI's? Think they're "rivals" as they are both the same size with small turbo charged engines

I wouldn't call them rivals at all!! A 2.0 isn't exactly a small engine.

na im sure they are really low insruance groups, i remeber reading the starlet gt was something like insurance group 7, it must be something low as i got a quote for around £700 from admiral, im 20 with 0ncb.
mabye the glanzaa is higher but i wouldnt assume by that much?
also the pulsar isnt exactly a rival lol its a 2.0 not a 1.3.

Getting fed up of this question being asked every week so:
The GT/Glanza being an import is subject to a wide range of insurance figures. Insurance companies often give an "import only" premium which can be 100% more than an equivalent UK car if there was such a thing...
The insurance group they quote can be anything form 8 to 16 with the "import only" premium on top.
Some people are paying upwards of £ 2000 for Starlet Turbo insurance, third party, fire & theft - because they're usually younger drivers, in an imported car, thats quite fast...
Places to try are:
Elephant (you will have to phone though)
Tesco's (same as above)
Adrian Flux
Bell direct
Footman james
Keith Michaels
Simon (cheers Andrew)

seems like it changes a lot depending on each insurance company...
quote:
Got my Glanza so im very very happy now. Got my insurance with norwich union. They told me they class the Glanza as group 7. have to pay an extra 147 quid on top of my old premium and when i renew in february i will be 22 with 4 years nc hopefully, and it will be about 700.
