We're getting a dog this year because there's been quite alot of activity on our street recently. Houses have been broken into, and im scared for my family when im not there, so ive decided to get a guard dog. My question is, what breed of dog would be best suited to the job? Whenever i think of guard dogs, i think of dobermans (the junk yard dogs) but i heard the tend to 'loose it' and ive got kids at home - so im not sure.

Any suggestions? Im not willing to spend more then £500 on a dog though, i dont make enough as it is.

Alsation, German shepard, Doberman

It all depends on the temperment of the dog and how well trained they are. You can train a dog to be agressive to people breaking in etc but you can never be 100% sure they will never attack someone else such as friends

I would be more inclined to get a dog that is great with people but looks the part

also big dogs need lots of time do you have that?

This boy looks the part

and everyone is scared of him, yet he is the softest peice of shit around

Dobermans are ace. Love their family to bits and would literally fight to the death to protect them.

boxers can also be good. boxers are quite dogs, dont bark alot, so burglers think they will get away with it. But the person will be surprised as the boxer will then pin the persoin down till someone comes.

i'd train it from a puppy so its not agrressive and difficult to control. but with these dogs they can snap at any given moment.

could be any reason, fear aggression, if its being freindly all its life and all sudden turned aggressive for so long could be a health problem. Behavioural problem.
