Im not a snob who needs the best make or anything and cant be arsed with Internet order bikes cos you have to put them together yourself.

Wanna spend about £200 to get a bike for the summer. Will be used for road and hills and maybe a bit of time in Snowdon or Peak district....my old ones knackered....actually a fair bit of off road now i think about it

so question is - will a halfords jobby (which comes assembled) last the year?

dont EVER go to halfruads for a bike, www.evanscycles.com etc will sort you out with a decent bike for £250, something like a specialized hard rock or scott YZ4

Bought an Apollo Slamshot from Halfords a few years ago as cheap communter bike to get me started cycling again.

Was okay to start with but once I started doing serious miles i.e 60miles per day everthing started to wear out.

Bottom Bracket worn out, Rear Hub worn out, Rear Wheel Spokes snaped, crank started to bend causing problems changing gears.....

I got a Carrera Kraken from Halfords just after Christmas, it was £350 but I got it for £200 in the sale, seems to be the best time of year to buy a bike as the old models are sold off cheap, havn`t got any complaints about the bike or level of service, which is strange for Halfords

Bikes aren`t difficult to put togther yourself, they come pre-assembled in the box, would take an hour or so

IIRC it's usually just wheels, seat post, and stem/handle bars so will take about 20 mins.

You could assemble a bike from a box in 5 mins... No hassle at all.

You can get a pretty decent package from Halfords these days. Stay away from anything with full suspension or disk brakes at that price. Hard tails are the way to go for what you want anyway, and if you get disk brakes they will be utterly awful!

i reckon i COULD do it but i dont want to fitting the gears and stuff like that. if its just wheels, seat post and handle bars as Nik says then that would be fine...

maybe if some one could point me to a good bike up to £250 on evanscycles.com or similar cos i aint got a clue what im looking for....cheers

You won`t have to fit the gears & stuff, they normally come with them fitted along with the rear wheel, as Nik says it`s just the seat post, front wheel, stem/handle bars & pedals

Chump, it will be easy mate. tools you will need are allen keys, spanners and thats it. as stated above its seat, peddles, handle bars, and usually just the front wheel. you will get a better bike for you'r money online so IMO i'd go for that and if you get any probs putting it together feel free to u2u me mate.
