I was starting to lose hope.
6months since it last saw the road and died on the journey home from Trax 05.
Have had a spare engine for ages and after a looong wait from the engine builder it was back home.
I posted a thread of it being painted a couple of weeks ago, but there's been some better progress since.
head went back on last week, and i've spent all of this week beavering away on the thing trying to get it back together.
most of the week seemed like i spent ages and got no-where, but yesterday and today came together well. From the engine compltete and sat on the garage floor this morning, it's actually in and it runs.
still to do is exhaust and colling system. Can't finish the cooling untill the rads in, and i can't put the rad in untill the exhaust is done. I'm missing a few manifold studs and vauxhall aren't open till monday, so it'll have to wait till then for completion.
i was trying to leave the box in place and just swap out the engine in situ, but after a major ballache trying to take out the old block in this method, i sacked that off and did it the simpler, longer way and lifted the car over the engine.
few pics:
engine mostly back together

new belt on year old rollers and water pump

had a cunt of a time painting on thursday. this was called metallic graphite, but it's more or less black. All was going well untill the newspaper i sat the cover on blew over and stuck to mt fresh laquer. tried rubbing down to repair it, but the rattle can emptied at a bad point and spat globules of paint all over the place. damage was done at this point and had no more spray, so i sacked that off and went with it how it was
On the upside, my new bolts look ace

cam pulley cutouts in belt cover. I know - pointless at the moment. Hoping to get cams and verniers this year though, so it was preparotory

today, engine in bay

longer view

broke my universal joint from the socket set trying to tighten the crank sprocket

didn't get one as it stands as hands were too greasy to pick up the phone, but it started and i let it run for as long as i dare with no silencing.
Major happy with todays progress.
Jambo is coming over tomorow to help me tidy up some more of the inside, so it's all coming together nicely now

£500's worth of parts and service from SBD
£200 of parts from Vaux
£400 bottom end rebuild labour
£250 Head rebuild port polish.
scray when you add it up and realise it's still pretty much a standar engine, but i plan on keeping it a few years and wanted to know it was sound.
i could have just dropped in this spare lump that i had, but i didn't know the history of it and would have kicked myself if i'd of fitted it and it was a duffer.
always has been the plan to take it on track. I was half intending too at trax last year but it was overheating constantly and showing low compression.
as soon as it's run i'll get to a couple of RWYB days, and once/if it proves reliable i'll get myself to a few track days.
if it doesn't last i'm selling up

this is how it looked when i left it yesterday

plug cover is much like yours' Fad. still needs a bit more polishing
SUNDAY -
Jambo turned up to help with the spraying. All the floor is mostly done now. it's not perfect, but the paint ran out, so we will re-visit another day. It needs a bit more colour in a few places and a couple of dodgy spots rubbing down. Also needs laquer yet, and we'll do the sides one day.
Looks great from a distance though
few progress shots:
masking - i told him to say cheese, but this takes the cheddar

how we started. boot area was done a while back

in primer

as it is now

Big thanks to Jambo for his help today.
