if its anything like yesturday and the day before, you will be looking at yesturdays score, as the cricket APG crashed at 5am on both of those days. The kid on nights today however is a useless cunt, and wont know how to restart the APG.

IT support at the press association.

The way it works is that we have some paki in the field inputting live ball by ball data (for most major sports, but in this case cricket) into our sports database. We then have relevant departments (football desk, rugby, cricket, world results (gays), racing etc etc) who process the data and then our APG scripts generate the live data and send it to customers via FTP. except the APG keeps resetting, and we have idiots in it.

I'm suprised these news centres are still distrobuting news via FTP, its like being stuck in the dark ages! Its the same for ITN who distro news to ch4/etc

your not kidding, but as far as RnD are concerned - if its not broke, then we wont fix it. Theyre too busy comparing world of warcraft charecters

FTP is a reliable technique for the sheer amount of data that we need to send, unlike one of our racing clients, which INSIST on recieving via email and has caused no end of trouble

Oh, and ITN get their stuff from us - and then on to their clients.

We are teh uber press group

Maybe you misudnerstood me, what I was getting at is FTP transfers data in clear text, which is extremely insecure. Doesnt take much to use SFTP, or SCP to transfer data. Its one of the reccomendations made when I audited some stuff for them.
