i just lost my hamster and wanted to replace it with rats or gerbils.
i'd prefer the rats, but gerbils are piss funny if you get a few of them.
anyone have either?
any recommendations?

i have rats and to be perfectly honest although im a believer in keeping animals in pairs if you were to get a rat they are better on their own
my rats are totally unsociable because they have each other. i have been told its better to keep one rat as then they are sociable
if you want a top rodent i highly highly recommend a chincilla.
he is the most intelligent rodent i have ever had and always makes me smile. very friendly and very sociable.
also if you can get hold of degu they are an excellant rodent to have. i really miss mine
if you really are an animal lover get yourself to your local animal sanctuary and give an unloved pet a home

never heard of a degu.
and haven't a clue what lemmings are like, apart from the pixelated ones.
chipmunks are cool, but they like a lot of space don't they? not sure i've got room. same with chinchillas.
still got some research to do.

That pic is one of those optical illusions If you look at it for long enough you'll eventually realise that there is infact a degu in the foreground

iv never had problems with my gerbils in the past, but them two ^^^ (Weeble and Bob) are brothers and have had them for 2 years, suddenly few weeks ago started fighting and trying to kill eachother (ripping chunks out of eachother, blood everywhere) so seperated them not and theyre both in with one black female each i hope for little ones soon! the lemmings are tiny but theyre really cute!

just read a couple of pages about them.
they seem quality. don't think i've ever seen one before though.
would you recommend the degu or a rat?

i'd want something that'll just sit on you ocassionly and not constantly fidget. something i never got from the hamster untill it turned ill.
i can't imagine gerbils sit still for very long although they are damn entertaining in groups.

we have one gerbil and 2 chinchillas. Hate the gerbil, chews everything all night and god damn its loud
I love the chinchillas, as kerry said they are so intelligent and so funny, especially when you let them out running round the room. Have to be committed with them though as you really need to let them out and id also recommend getting a pair, since getting our original chinchilla's mum and puting them back together, they are so much happier and active

had them a few years ago. they were the opposite end of the scale.
always sat in the dark side of the hutch and never liked to be handled. loved them, but they very pretty boring.
