I am confused as to why the aliens died at the end and stopped functioning. I remember something being said about how they didn't count on the smallest thing in the world from stopping them. What is this? Bacteria from humans? (think I saw them feeding on people).
Really been getting on my nerves, can't figure it out

i think it was because they were drinking the water, which contained bacteria which we're immune to, and they're not. therefore they all must of drank the water and got infectecd by the bacteria.
class film though!

Yes im sure it was something to do with the bacteria. I remeber it confused me to.. I think its one of those films u need to watch it a couple of times to grasp it properly

Maybe when they planted the big robot things thousands of years ago they were immune to everything, but then over the years obviously new straigns of bacteria have developed that killed them off maybe?

In the early hours of the morning, Ray is seen trying to wash himself at the broken water main when Ogilvy suddenly shouts "RAY! RAY! RAY!" Ray, scared that aliens might hear the loud voice, runs up to Ogilvy and sees him looking outside through a small basement window. Ogilvy walks off while Ray takes his place and looks through the window. It's then that Ray discovers that the Tripods have another function beside merely exterminating humans, as not all humans encountered are destroyed but are also "harvested."
The epilogue shows a top-down view of an unnamed, half-destroyed city, littered with fallen Tripods, and while the camera zooms in on a gray tree branch with drops of water on it, a narrator's voice-over by Morgan Freeman says, "The aliens' machines were invulnerable to our weapons and technology. But the moment the aliens started breathing our air, drinking our water and eating our food, they were finished."
Tom Cruise goes from New York to Boston. In the meantime, aliens attack and kill people. As soon as Tom is in Boston the aliens die; killed by micro-organisms (not by humans).

Dont worry Dave Richie didnt really get it either i had to explain to him ... and i only knew because someone had asked on here a few months ago.
The ending is shit, they were killed by mico orgamisms ... wow, but the film is a PG 13 and 13 year old kids arent gunna figure that out for themselves are they
