Anyone know much about them?

Thinking of buying one second hand to practice on, not very gen'd up on them though... Always just bought keyboards only in the past.

Anything I should/shouldn't go for? Prices etc.?

you can hardly give them away. My folks couldnt sell theirs so paid someone to come and get rid of it. Dont pay too much

Because of the weight of it perhaps - i.e. prospective non-local buyers not willing to have it moved?

Or do people just not want pianos any more?

I had a quick look on eBay last night seen some sell for as little as £30!

no demand. They were often bought for aesthetics not function - not really inkeeping with current styles

yup. TBH other than prices I dont know a great deal about them in terms of what to look for, tuning etc.

They're often very cheap but watch out for tatty old stuff, which is very difficult to tell apart without hearing it.

On ebay, 'out of tune' can either mean its lost tune consistently throughout the entire range, or its completely goosed an needs restringing due to being tuned so many times the pegs are through the back board.

Unless you fancy any duets the former isn't a problem, but the latter will be unless you want a bill for £500 to get it right.

Im no expert, but recently did a job that involved moving one

I was told (reliably or not) that it would requie tuning afterwards cos of the move. So no doubt the tune will be over and above the purchase cost

£30ish per hour plus parts. Normally £30-50

This is very true. I've had normal electronic keyboards before (crap and decent expensive ones), but isn't really as good to play as a normal piano.

I don't mind paying £500 to have one restrung if it needed it as the initial cost of the piano itself would not be much compared to that, as I do not want to pay about £10k for a new or expensive secondhand one...

Think I need to go off and do some more research into the logistics of this... i.e. how much it's gonna cost me to get one moved to my house from wherever I buy one from!
