im thinking of selling the corsa soon, and getting either a 1.8 or 2.0 mk4 astra. I know theyre not going to be amazingly quick, but ive drove the 1.6 and it was certainly fast enough for me for now. what do people think of these? are the engines tunable? (i cant insure any faster cars than these btw)

thanks.

I think they are allright cars and can be made to look quite smart. Build quality isn't bad. Make sure you get at least an SXi as anything lower spec than that has a crap interior. My Dad has one as his run around car and I think the only thing thats gone wrong is the sensor for the outside temperature played up a couple of times. Other than that its been a good reliable car

Stick to Irmscher stuff and you wont go far wrong

thanks for that mate. yeh i want a reasonable interior and leccy windows etc. yeah styling will be mostly subtle, may change wheels, then lower it, and a few irmscher parts, nothing major, and maybe tune engine slightly.

cant decide on black or silver at the moment lol. probably go for the 1.8 engine for cheaper insurance and it wont be much slower than the 2.0.

if you get the later 1.8 engine they are quicker than the 2.0
1.8 has a shorter ratio gearbox
Silver one would probably be cheaper as they are quite common but still look good. Just not as good as black

both are tunable these days, turbo conversions for the 2.0 and the 1.8 are available. Or if you want to do things like cams, manifolds, chips, filters, exhausts both have lots a parts avaiable although prices for these parts are not at all cheap. Most find themselves looking for a turbo model as the price of these have come down compared to the price of modding the 1.8 or 2.0.

Performance wise there isnt lots in it, in all honesty. Yes the 2.0 is quicker but it is more top end than bottom end, if I had the choice between the 2 I would only pick the 2.0 if it was the same price.

1.8 comes in sport, sxi and sri for the latter models. Only real difference is that the sri ones came with Irmscher body kit, the sport had less options IE no spoiler as standard however is the only one to have switchable TC. All came with fogs, AC, alloys and sports suspension. 2.0 came with all the bits the 1.8 offers minus the TC again, plus more electric things.

Make sure you buy an astra with ABS though, this is 80% of time determined by a 5 stud car but some are 4 stud. 5 stud car would make brake upgrades a lot easier in the future, and the ABS brakes are 100% better than non ABS.

Quite a lot to look out for on them but you can ask about that if you decide you want one. Mine was a 1.8 sport on an S reg 1998 and I loved it, in fact I still have the car but no the engine

Mike if you get a latter one or you shop about you should find a 1.8 sri with the irmscher kit. Or you could just as easy find a 1.8 SXI on an earlier plate which had the optional extra of the kit fitted, the market is flooded with them so have a good look around and get value for money and the colour spec you want

sorry yes all the models I have mentioned come with electric windows, fogs, AC, most come with ABS, alloys, sports seats, sports suspension, air bags, white dials, cd player and tilt and slide steering. Later ones also come with colour coded bump strips, tinted front and rear lights.
