I recieved my renewal for tax through the post this morning and was shcoked. The 2 options were

£93.50 for 6 months
or
£170 for 12 months

i was wondering how the dvla comes to these price assumptions, i think its quite a large amount to pay. Is on a 1.6 sport '(97) btw

Ill explain what I did.

I took my insurance/mot certificate and my credit card, drove to the local Post Office, paid the £170 and that was it really.

Nowt you can do about it. My tax is more on my 1.6 than my dads is on 2.0 V6 rover

i think on older cars, like pre 02/03 they go off the engine size, but theres only 2 classes, wankers. but on newer stuff it must go off emissions and what the car is used for.

The owner of a £90k car should be taxed a hell of alot more than the owner of a £3k car IMO.

Why, because he can afford a more expensive car than you!?!?!?

The tax is supposedly to pay for your right to use the roads, so if they want to price it fair then they should calculate your annual mileage and charge a rate per 100 miles. Obviously this would take some organising to stop people cheating the system, but its the only fair system.

The cost of the car is irrelevant. The richer person has the same road access, so should pay the same. That's fair.
The new system is roughly Y plate onwards.
My Mum pays £10 more for 12 months than I pay for a year.

Company cars work on emissions

You pay tax out of your wage on emissions thus most company cars are oil burners

Like most cars tax is now calculated on emissions - You are placed in brackets

Mine is £190 a year

I also think they should scrap car tax and put a sperate tax on petrol to cover this

Thus the more petrol you use the more tax yopu pay - this will denote either bigger engine cars with bigger emissions or people who use their car more thus causing more damage to raod surfaces hence cost of keeping the road surface in order

This way no one can evade car tax as you have to pay for petrol to use your car

i agree with that yes, as i only do about 4000 miles a year so why should i pay as much a the man next door who does about 50,000 miles a year.

but, then all parcel companies, plumbers etc will suffer, and that aint fair on them

so, there is no answer, we just have to put up with it
