I'd say it's more like preventative fighting......only someone excessively stupid (errm, OK, that includes most chavs, then) would attack someone tapping a baseball bat into their hand!
And, to be honest, you'll need to do martial arts for quite a while before you learn anything that would be largely useful in a "street-fight", in my opinion. What you going to do when you first start learning? Say to the chav attacking "oh, hold on, can you attack me with your other hand, I haven't learned how to block that side yet"?
And yes, I do have experience of what's learned in martial arts classes, I was in a Kung Fu class for 3 years pre-Uni, that mixed syllabus-stuff with varying amounts of street-fighting and bar-brawling "self-defence" techniques......most of them involved the underlying statement of "incapacitate your attacker then run like hell"

i do boxing <its good for you mentally and physically .
and loafofbret i wouldnt quite say that , would you fight say kahn? or lewis? tyson? richardson?
i think not.
of course it works , especially with speed and stamina, and the more you fight the better you become at it and realise there weak points straight away and use that to beat them.
i used to do karate till i were 16 and got to brown one before black (shotokahn) and id say its alot easier than boxing
