Work for Leeds Learning Network, they provide internet for schools and libraries.

I talk to a girl on MSN who I've met outside of work (friend of a friend), we're just friends like... she is 17, I'm 19, so no issue about age (even for friends)... she is in the 6th form at one of the schools we provide for...

Today I was told that I should no longer communicate with her...

What do you guys think?

It's not allowed... it also says in my contract I should have no relationship what so ever (friendships or other) with any customer of the business... this rules out the whole of Leeds, as I work for Leeds City Council!

Its actually illegal in some cases, look up Sexual Offences Bill, if the student is under 18 and in full time education, and your relationship to her could be construed as either a position of trust or authority, probably the latter in your case.

Even if it doesn't fall outside the law, the bill also advises that relationships like this are 'a matter of professional discipline', so basically you shouldn't bother disputing it as they do have legal support as such, ie. you couldn't say its an infringement of Human Rights Act (which technically, it is under article 8).

Wrong - the pupils age is considered in law, the staff members is not. Doesn't matter if you're only two years older, she is still under 18.

Doubt it

They will have to be very strict about stuff like this

Imagine if Ant & this chick formed a relationship & then someone who is 1 year older than Ant decided they also wanted a relationship with a student. They might also allow this, but then where do they draw the line? And what happened if someone spat the dummy out one day & decided that they would report them because they aren't allowed a relationship & other are

I can see why they don't allow it

I normally just say yes because quoting all the laws which you need to be familiar with isn't as funny or cool.
